Did you use any stain in the mix with that lower section? Looks very realistic, and I'm guessing cheaper than buying rocks that size. I am looking into building something in the backyard to crawl on that will be nice a purty for the wife as well. I am thinking I'll have to put a waterfall in it so she won't know its for crawling.

Yea, I've used different color liquid dyes in most of the concrete mixes. (Available at Lowes and Home Depot.) But I used enough of the dye only once, in the red steep section in the corner. Next time I'll use the entire bottle for 2 bags of cement. Its very tough to match colors when you to have touch up a section the next day or add to it later, which always happens.
Comparing the cost of rocks vs. concrete. Hmmmm
Concrete/Cement $8/10 for 80/90 lb. bags
Stucco lathe $8 for 2'x6' I think
Boulders $15-20 a ton, I hauled 'em. Alot more exspensive if somebody brings them to you. Also consider whether a large truck can get to your desired spot. Dumping rocks then moving them again is not good.
The rocks are changeable but too many gaps are bad. Also can be faster to get a section built and ready to crawl on. But very hard to make it look natural.
Concrete or cement is labor intensive to form up, mix, slather out and finish. I tkink it's easier to make it look natural with a little work. But pretty rewarding. So far it takes me a day to form,mix, and pour 2 large bags. Then another 1/2 day to spray some paint on and scrape most of it off with a piece of rough concrete.
Waterfall... yea I've been trying to fight that urge....

I was out there around Thanksgiving and Mike is a great guy. He's as nice in person as he is online. And it appears building the Crawliseum is a full time job for Mike. The place looks completely different than it did a month agO! Thanks Mike!

Here's some before and after pics of a couple of sections I've changed since Thanksgiving. I took out these two sections of bedlined foam and put in Quartz and concrete slabs.

Next I removed one of the elevated bedliner pieces and setup some concrete slabs. We filled the gaps and seams with cement to get rid of some of the raw edges.

It was nice to have one side of the course open while the weather was nice but that didn't last long enough. We threw a few boards up and stretched some 4mil plastic.
The plastic is temporary 'tll spring, but is well worth the $25 to cover the 12'x50' wall to block the wind and hold in some heat.

Time for the next addidtion.
At this point the pics are update and it's time to add another fake rock area. First are a couple of pics of the area before I get started.
It's gonna be big, anyone want to help mix and slather on cement today? :shock:
That's as far as I got last nite.
Today I'll have a couple of buds helpin', so hopefully we'll get all of the cement layed on the lathe. Btw, it's 18 degrees here, not exactly concrete pouring weather!
