I have gobs more pics, but dont want to overload the thread.. "thumbsup"

Been eyeing these challanges, I'd like to try one. I'm not 100% clear on this one though- it just says 3 to 5 "tools". Are we talking hand tools or shop tools? Maybe a broader interpretation of a "tool"?? I'm not trying to be too nit-picky, I just would like a bit of clarification. "thumbsup"

The way I understand it, its any tool that could be found in a shop or on a trail rig. That's what I got from it lol, I'd like more clarity also.

Its stated that way to open it up to more possibilities. Tools can mean screw driver, bandsaw, jack... You could make a drill press, bandsaw and jack, or a hammer, screwdriver and crowbar, anything you want, but there has to be at least 3"thumbsup"

Hi J- don't know if I'll be able to do anything at the moment, I start full time school in the fall while finishing up the summer semester, plus I'll be living in a tiny basement in a row house in Dundalk very soon.

well my pc has been on the fritz, so I haven't been able to post much lately. here's a few pics of what will be our biggest tool for this challenge.

I have twisted the rules a bit, but so far it is all plastic, just not nessecerally styrene.

this is gonna be a stand up, twin cylinder air compressor. stated this build with the tank. the tank was built using 2 energy shot bottles. here's some pics...........

also got the base built for it.

don't know if i'll be DQ'd for my use of materials as of yet, i'll wait and see.

you shouldn't be, it's probably ABS, which is styrene with acrylonitrile butadiene added.
well, prolly not for the way it is so far, but may still be DQ'd in the end, lol. me and my son are really having fun with these. the real fun is in finding "natural" stuff that just seems to work for what you're wanting to do. more on that a lil later

I like the fact that you're using random (plastic) items to make parts for your build, so you can get shapes that you can't just go out and buy, but I don't make the rules, so I don't know what will be said. I "personally" think you should be fine, but like I said I don't make the rules. But just so you know, styrene is actually a liquid. It's a compound for making plastics. What you buy at the LHS thats made by evergreen, is actually "polystyrene", it's just a mixture of styrene and resins, same as ABS, thats what the "S" stands for.

About dang time you posted these pics up lol. It looks great so far.
Hopefully I'll get some tools whipped up tonight.

well here's a shot of it after getting the base plate, motor, and twin cylinder compressor built. we used styrene tube for most all the compressor pump parts and the electric motor. the cylinders on the pump were actually made from some cut down ink pen tubes....some more "ABS"=AlmostBuiltouttaStyrene"thumbsup"

this is actually the last pic of the compressor i'm gonna post until my final pic, which will include all of our tools finished......painted and whatever else we decide to do to them.

Not much but I built all this all outta styrene no build pics

Nice job on those tools "thumbsup"

BUT - the challenge is supposed to be "new" builds - not things that were done in the past (and/or posted elsewhere) - this is kinda the reason for requiring the build pics in addition to the final product.

got a few more pics for ya'll...

the welder is coming along nicely...

The cart is also taking shape - managed to figure out how to make functioning casters for the front!

tools106cart.jpg

tools116cartcasters.jpg

(if anyone wants the details on how to make the casters, just let me know - I took lots of pics)

the jack is pretty much complete except for paint...

and I started an oxygen bottle for the welder set - made completely from styrene...

making the body of the bottle out of 0.5mm sheet - really should have wrapped all the way around a full two wraps plus a little overlap - would be much sturdier, but it seems to be ok as is...

and the start of the bottle top...
