The Styrene Challenge #3 - "Tools"

first off, I must say to heartless, that welder and jack look like they're gonna be very hard to beat"thumbsup"

well, we got around to making our 2nd tool this evening. I got off a lil early, so here's what we came up with so far for tool #2.

decided on a drill press. started off by dismantling a typical ball point pen. used the main body of the pen for the main tube part of the drill press. also cut/modded the pen top/cap to be used for the adjustable bed plate.

here's a pic of the modded top/cap.

This sounds like a good time to learn how to make my own accessories...

Dive right in and join the fun!

While this particular "challenge" is almost over (done on Friday evening) there is no reason you cant build some stuff anyway.

Fatboy - that drill press is looking really good! Cant wait to see what else everyone comes up with! "thumbsup"

Thanks! if you think those look good - wait until you see the oxy bottle - I think I have outdone even myself on that one!

well we made a quick decision for our 3rd tool, and it's going together almost as fast.

this particular tool is made up mostly out of ink pen parts-the plastic pieces.

started with 2 identical pen tops, cut them as needed and glued together.

then added some cut down ends from a couple of ball point pens to the ends of the main body, and also used another pen tube/body and some black sheet styrene to make a stand for it.

still have some work to do to get it finished, but not a lot of painting to do on this one. so Friday's deadline shouldn't be a problem for us.

Hey guys dont know if I can enter since I have no build pics but just wanted to share and hopefully inspire some of you with these

The shovel takes about 20-30mins
The axe and hatchet about 1day.

I have some ideas for more tools. So ill take photos along the way. Do those count as 3 of my 6? And is it 6 photos per tool?

I would say yes, those should count for 3, and no-in this challenge you just have to post a total of 6. so, 2 more build pics, then i'd do like one pic with them all together after painted, which would give you 6 total pics.

First off, great stuff guys and gals:wink: I also really appreciate everyone pitching in with the questions and such"thumbsup" Just to reinstate whats been said and clarify a couple things:

To enter, you must have 5 build pics and 1 final piece pic = Total of 6 pics. I encourage entrants to add more if they can.

The only material allowed to be used, in the Styrene Challenge, is Styrene (as it is most commonly referred to). I truly appreciate all the projects that have been made from other materials as they look fantastic and serve their purpose, however, I cannot allow them to be entered. My reasoning is that all those shapes can be made from Styrene, they might take a little more effort and practice. But that's why I started this Challenge, so we can all learn how to use simple styrene shapes to make all sorts of cool things. I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from building, I just needed to clarify and keep the challenge on track.

Keep building, have fun"thumbsup"

One more thing to add:
When you submit your final pictures, try and get the angles that show off the best work. Use good light, and a steady hand. I go through all the pics looking for best I can find to use for the voting thread and if your piece is perfectly crafted, and well documented, a blurry, grainy picture can ruin all that hard work"thumbsup"

Ok, so I broke the rules. actually broke them BIG time, from the get go. I knew when I started this challenge that our tools wouldn't be considered for judging. I've had the ideas for these pieces for some time now, and just thought that this was a good time to share some of my ideas/skills with my son.

so with that said, i'd just like to add that we had fun with these and enjoyed the time spent. in the end, it's all about the fun, and it was all worth it.

so, here's some finished pics for you to enjoy"thumbsup"

That compressor looks dangerous with no cage around the pulleys and belt lol. Even though they're not completely styrene they still look great and its always good to share something like this with your little ones.

Fatboy - that compressor is outstanding! Very well done (sorry about the dq - but the "boss" has spoken....) The drill press and bench grinder look great too. I also think it is fantastic that you have spent the time with your son building these items!

I thought about trying to recreate the compressor we have in the garage (homebuilt, horizontal style tank), even took a bunch of reference pics, but wasnt sure I could pull off making the tank...or the pressure regulators/moisture traps...

Thnk you heartless. Well the main thing is that we spent time together and fun doing them. And hopefully at the least i have made most everyone who has looked at these tools look at and find a use for ordinary everyday objects in their builds.

I hope you never look at an ink pen as a writing utensil again"thumbsup"

Happy building fellas.

You got that right!

and no - i probably wont ever look at the multitude of ball point pens we have lying around the house the same way ever again! LOL (I could seriously build a HUGE aresenal of 1/10 scale missles!! ROFL (the other half is quite the pen acquire-er! )

okey-dokey - here we go - final pics for your enjoyment. I have to say I had a heck of time with the teeny-tiny styrene hoses & plug cord wanting to break off the welder box while trying to bend them around for the posing shots....

I am probably gonna have to take a break after this one - have ignored the truck build completely (and I really need to get that done!), and school will be starting up again soon as well (Aug 26th)... wont have nearly as much time for fun stuff when that happens...
