Tommy R's TTC Build - "Big Oly"

And a big THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me and Big Oly for the MSD TTC Competition! We made it in thanks to you all! I'll definitely give 'er hell!!

You're welcome :ror: Now, get that truck back together so you can actually carry out your promise to give 'er

You got it! Interior is going in. New steering servo arrives tomorrow. I WILL be driving this thing again tomorrow night....but now with rear steer and mo' powah!! 8)

Glad you got it figured all out."thumbsup"
I would hate to be put to shame by ONLY my own driver in the TTC:mrgreen:

Thanks, Devlin. That's what I feared so I'm glad I went with the 7950.

your welcome

hopefully u settled the servo thing... wont be nice to hear you go there as audience only....

NOW GO BEAT THE HELL OUT OF THIS OLLY!! "thumbsup""thumbsup""thumbsup"

It'll be back together this evening and driven for the first time since I disassembled it for powdercoating. So I may not post any more pics until it's all back together nice and purty. I want to grab a few side by side pics with it's little brother (the Yota) before I ship the Yota to Montana tomorrow. 8)

Once again. Good news and bad news.

GOOD:
The truck is back together. Rear steer is awesome and opens up opportunities I could've only dreamed of with one steering axle. It's pretty awesome, but potentially confusing and definitely slows me down a bit because it's not all second nature yet.

BAD:
The HH 10t is getting hot as hell. I don't have a pyrometer, but it's way too hot to touch. I don't know how much the tape may be contributing to the problem, but it quite simply can't be good for the motor.

In addition, the drivetrain is acting like something is hitting or binding with every axle rotation. Perhaps this is extra drag contributing to more load on the motor and of course, heat? Every component spun quite freely before. I'll tear everything down.....again.....and try to determine what's going on.

I *can* run it right now, but I know it would kill my motor at some point and all that heat would likely end up draining my batteries, too. I need to finish and pack the Toyota tonight. Hopefully I'll then have time to mess with this thing afterward.

*sigh*

Try this, will allow some air flow and still keep the debris out."thumbsup"

Thanks, man. I think I may actually have some of that here at the house.

Some good news. After some troubleshooting, it appears I had a bit of a bind at the front axle yolk to the driveshaft. I addressed that and things are turning more consistently w/o any binding or "high spots" in the drivetrain. I pulled off half the tape and did a little crawling around in the front yard. I did some WOT acceleration runs, some low speed crawling, played around with the rear steer, etc. Ultimately, the motor still got warm, but not nearly as hot as before. Will removing the rest of the tape make it "cool enough"? Will adding a filter cause the temps to rise again? Testing will tell....

from my experience, when a power motor used for crawling or any slow moving work, it will get a little bit warm.. but should not get hot.

i have tried installed on mine the 10T motor.. (normally used for touring)... damn it is indeed warmer than my 23T motor on the same ratio... but interestingly, if you WOT on it... as it is meant to be used for, it is cooler than before... i even tried racing in the mud.. the water keep it cool and it blasted through the water like it's a touring car :lmao:

well thats from my observation.. hopefully you can solved yours. No matter what, prepare a spare motor for the TTC.. u need the peace of mine knowing you have everything covered even at the worst case scenario.

all the best!!! "thumbsup"

Can you run some sort of a heatsink on it? Not sure if the OD is the same as a 540 can. I switched to sensored brushless partially due to heat issues and won't be going back. I hope you get it figured out. If I remember right, my pullers ran much hotter than the standard motors.

Thanks, guys....

JonehRC, hopefully the moisture will help keep the motor cool during the TTC! :) During the regular runs, I'm not so sure. I'm okay if it just runs hot. I just don't want it failing!

Dean, I'm running sensored brushless in the C1 truck (MMP and a 18.5T Novak) and I think it's a matter of time before something like that powers this rig, too. It's too late to look into that now so I'm going to do the best I can with what I've got. I'll replace the tape with gauze. I'll see if I can fit a heatsink on there (doubtful) and I may experiment with 3s, as well.

At least it's running otherwise. :ror:

Sorry to hear about the motor heat issues Tommy. The pullers definitely run hotter, and need to be geared down to avoid overheating. A spare motor with all the leads soldered on is not a bad idea for a back-up. after I burned up my motor in the ttc last year, Ryan G. Gave me a back-up motor, but he also had to break out the generator and soldering iron to help me get things back together between events. Definitely not something I'd want to repeat or see anyone else fall to the same fate!

MMP in the C1 truck?? ... that MMP ESC shud be in this truck for the TTC..
we do not have TTC race here but we tried copying the trail & challenges like you guys have there ... I still prefer the brushless system for this kind of challenges.. the power, speed and the safety it has in comparison with brushed motor in the muddy water.. second to none.

oh well.. its kind of too late to change already. just prepare a 2nd motor with all the cables ready ..

you can do this.. u will be ready.. sacrifice some for late night to early morning prepping it though "thumbsup"

Tommy I have an extra Brood I am glad to bring for a back up or Prime. I used it in Tim's TTC and have had great luck with it in C3. It's only out of the truck because of the Stack/t8 combo we are running. I'll be running it's twin in my c2 truck
Sounds like you still have a little drag somewhere though.

That's a good point, Chris. I'll gear it down a bit and also verify my pinion mesh. I suspect it may be a bit on the tight side. It's got great speed right now, though! I really like the current gearing setup, but I'll sacrifice some speed if it makes the motor happier.

Patrick (Locked Up) has a spare 10t puller that I can borrow as a back-up and I'll make sure it's got connectors soldered on. Thanks for the heads up! "thumbsup"

Well, I've got a waterproofed HH BR-XL so the ESC is a tough one. And at the time I was researching this, it seemed people weren't sure if brushless was a good idea for water and mud. So that's why I went this route. I suspect in time I will end up getting a Tekin T8 and one of those neato t-case/transmissions that should be coming out soon (like in Tim's rig and a couple others). That would be a ton of added simplicity to this truck and would get me a LOT more room under the hood. But that'll have to wait now....

Well, I've fortunately got a back-up motor, but the issue is it's about a 30 minute ordeal to swap the motor....if I hurry! Nearly the entire interior needs to come out. That's only an issue if I have to swap it during a mechanical or during the TTC, though. I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that, though.

The drivetrain seems to rotate smoothly and consistently now, so that's good. What I think will be a good test is to run an entire battery(s) to the LiPo cutoff to see what kind of run time I get out of them. I'm also going to pick up a pyrometer to keep tabs on the puller during testing this week. I'm waiting to hear back from John to find out what a safe max temp is for this motor.

Do you know when those Stacks are going to be available? I really need one of those for little ol' Oly. :ror: And like I said, I suspect a T8 is in the plans, too.

Well I am hoping it is ready by MSD.....

There was a small issue with heat treat as I understand it. This weekend is also the Axial West Coast Challenge. I was hoping to go down and help with the event but it looks like I will be doing tidy work on my C3 build. I should have a Stack by Sunday PM. If all goes well at MSD I would venture a guess a month or so after. I haven't heard full timelines for supply. I know there are more cases cut and anodized than what we are running at MSD.

It leaves absolutely no time for testing before we leave at o'dark thirty Wed night/ Thursday am. Hoping to get a little time on the rocks at the HG before we all head out to dinner Thursday night.

I'll toss the Br00d in my spares anyways if you need it holler. I'll let you drive the C2. Officially it doesn't exist, when I got the pair from Eddie he said they broke things, yeah yeah, well I tore the s__t outta my C3 rig before updating everything to HD gears, drivelines etc...."thumbsup"

I think after MSD I'll prolly revert the Jeep to a GCM transfer case and Axial and am picking up a Bronco from Colquitt to build a new truck with the T8 Stack as inspiration....
