Too much time and a set of bully gears

This has nothing to do with AX-10 but it goes down the same line as others...
Ever since I saw the way Erik made the D-Lux axles I was thinking that I could do something with the bully gears that Ia had around.
I never put it to paper (or should I say bits), but then I saw all of the custom gear boxes that are showing up and I thought "Damn it! Now I really have to do it!"

So...

This is what I was thinking...







And then to the laptop...





I calculated the gearing and, with the axial axles and a 12t pinion, should be similar to the bully v1 axles (+/- 39:1).

The box is a bit wider than the berg box that is out there because the bully gears are also bigger.
As it is,with 2mm plates, it's 19.6mm wide.

I was thinking about being able to mount the motor on both sides of the box (normal pinion on one side and bully pinion is I mount on the other side).

After this I will try to design a chassis around the box and for that I will try to do something different.

This is for me to do when I have time and patience so it will take some time.
Besides, I have no CNC or a lathe, and I need both to turn this to reality....

Now there's AX-10 boxes, xr-10, berg, rc4wd and, finally BULLY (at least on the computer....) :flipoff:

Any comments or ideas are very much welcome!
 
So this is what I was thinking about for the chassis.





I was looking for a short skid and the motor can drag on the rocks as it does on a MOA. I can put some lexan to protect it anyway...
Links will be challenging but it should be ok.
As it is the chassi is 203mm long, 72 wide and 50 tall.

Can anyone tell me the spacing for the mounting holes on the 540 motors?
I'm doing this thousands of miles away from any any of my rc stuff...:roll:

What you guys think?
It will never work?
 
Gearbox design looks promising as have many of the other renditions out there, but I think 72mm is too wide for a "skid" measurement.
 
I agree that the skid is looking too wide...
One of the problems is that I don't have other pinions that I can measure (other than the 12t that I have), so I made it on the wide and safe side.
Can anyone give me some OD for some other pinions? 10t and 14 or 15 would be very helpful.
And also I went with the full 540 can size because that is what I will use...
Still I might try to do something about it for my next design.
 
So here is the new design.
It is 65.78mm wide and a bit taller.
Still I think it's ok and I will see if I'll be able to cut it a bit more when I measure some pinions.





On the bottom I'll make a lexan skid like I have on the Bully.
The shaft that goes from the gearbox to the rear axle will have to be long enough to clear the motor, but that is ok as it will have to be custom made anyway...

Regarding the size of different pinions, I don't know what cad program you are using but I use a plugin in my cad to generate gears. You might be able to get a similar plugin for your program. It's really nice not having to measure and model each gear.
 
That would be VERY nice!
All of my gears were measured by hand so I'm sure that they are not 100% accurate...

I'm using Solidworks 2010 and I don't have any plugins.
Maybe I should try and look for something like that.
 
I was exploring the internet and my solidworks and I found the library where I can make the gears!!
That just proves that I have a lot to learn in solidworks...

When I'll have some time I'll explore a bit more and make the gears again.
