Hi Guys, It's me your friendly neighborhood Mainiac.

I got a Dinky R/C Trailer for Christmas from my pretty wife. I like it but thought it oughtta have Leaf springs.

Here's how it came out of the box...

All Sticked together. I used Oatey. Oatey rules because it's for ABS plumbing stuff. And the can is really explosive later.

I layed down some grey primer than a cool old cobalt blue. Scotchbrited it and then used some old antiquing paint I have.

And since we're in Maine, it's obviously a rust hound...

As far as the axles go, so far I have built the spring and shackle mounts and they're ready to go on. I drilled the mounts and the trailer to take a small piece of carbon fiber rod to keep everything located while the Oatey sets up and to help with sheer strength/side loads.

I will be clamping a small steel tube to the axles and running some threaded rod through it for the wheels/hexes to bolt to.

These wheels and tires are just for mockup. Something along the lines of the gmade steelies and a small 1.9 tire I think.

More Later, once I've, you know, done more.

I really like your setup, the spring block. That actually gives me an idea for mine...maybe some sort of rod end etc.

looking forward to what you come up with. I might have another trailer project and i'm always open to new ideas.

You should really take better care of your Christmas gifts...

Whatcha gonna tow it with? Looks like it needs sumpin rusty.

Rust job looks fantastic. What aging kit did you use?
Thanks, Sophisticated finishes.

This has been sitting as I worked on other things. Finally got around to setting the leaf mounts up. I drilled a hole in the hangers where they mount to the trailer and the base of the trailer. There's a small piece of carbon rod in them to add sheer strength to the bonded ABS.

Ahhh a spring master I see... This is a sweet trailer!

Please help.

I put together my EarthRoamer with black springs and they are too stiff. No flex at all. On some of these builds and videos it looks like the coupler that attaches to the spring and chassis moves... Is the coupler and spring suppose to be completely tightened down to each other or is the coupler supposed to hinge on the spring?

The spring should be able to move in both the shackle and the solid mount.

These bruiser springs don't budge either way. They have 3 layers and no holes for the mount... If they flex at all, they bend. I need different springs. Thanks for the help.

Great job on the rust finish! Skillz-O-plenty "thumbsup".

The Tf2 springs are the same as the bruiser springs. I'm only running the main leaf. If you're bending the spring something is wrong. The spring is only supposed to bend a tiny bit. The flexing, combined with the stationary mount on one end and the shackle at the other end provides the rest.

The spring should swivel inside the mount with no resistance and the shackle should flop around as well.

Aside from filling the trailer with stuff, I think I'm calling it done and just going to drag it around :) I'll have to fab up a license plate for it too I suppose :ror:
