I just bought a Traxxas XL-1 ESC out of a Villain IV boat. I can't find much information on it only that it is simaler to the EVX & its rated for motors down to 17t and can handle 14.4 volts. Does anyone know more about this ESC.

Actually, Traxxas rates the XL-1 for 8.4 volts, with a "mild modified" motor limit (17 turns+, according to Tower).

I guess I should have specified that the Traxxas Vilain boat has duel motors and the ESC has two Tamiya connectors for two batterys. Its also an older ESC, the new Vilain boats have up dated water cooled ESC's. Like I said the only thing I could find compared it to the E-Maxx ESC.

You have the pre-EVX speed control that was originally in the E-Maxx and Villain, which they replaced with the EVX. I don't remember the specific problems, but being that it's a traxxas esc, I'm going to bet heat is one of them.

Thanks Trike Kid. Any suggestions on cooling an ESC. I was thinking about running a cooling fan wired to my RX pack across the heat sinks just because of the lack of airflow when crawling. I just read in the tech section about shorting out on side of the EVX to run 7.2v, after I do this will I still be able to run 9.6v? Should I solder all the battery wires together, red/red-black/black then one connector?

I hope to hell I didn't fry another one.

Finally got around to putting this XL-1 in my rig the other day. This thing is huge! The thing came with two battery connectors on one set of wires and two motor connectors on the other set of wires so I felt I was good to go on running 9.6v and should have no problems. I was wrong. Green light comes on, goes red when I pull the throttle, nothing happens but the battery wires get real f*#king hot.
HELP!!!
