What mods to make SCX10-II crawl great

Ditch the stock front bumper and stock tires. Stock bumper catches on everything and the stock tires don't shed mud.

Instead of adding aluminium bits for durability and adding weight for low center of gravity, try to remove unecessary weight, move components such as esc and battery as low as possible. Probably the most capable rig I've ever had is a pretty much bone stock "plastic fantastic" SCX10 gen 1 Jeep kit. I did only a few mods; better links/rod ends, battery up front, Axial 8-hole plastic beadlocks with 70 grams of lead on front wheels, TSL XL tires with CI foams. And a proper set of electronics of course. Light weight will add durability on stock plastic bits. No lights, drivers or any scale bits, smaller battery and so on. Look at the pro crawlers. They shave of everything that doesn't need to be there.

Less is more!
