why shouldn't I get the XR10? beats the alternative?

Thanks erik, i'll be ordering some now that my XR10 should be here next week.

I'll be looking to you guys for some help and guidance.

You are correct about the bearings causing the gear failures. You have a few different options as far as replacing them, I wouldn't even assemble the kit with the stock bearings though. That said my axles have lasted over a year with nothing but VP bushings (knuckles and Chubs were done on assembly also, but don't effect the gears) on 3s with 55t's and I've tried to break the gears. The truck wads into a ball and takes it, the bushings are stronger than any bearing option and I believe almost all gear problems are bearing issue's even with 10mm bearings.

Almost forgot, go with the white compound. Stay away from the pinks.

This can potentially be some inaccurate advice.

While whites are just about the best go-to all-around tire, the pinks can hold an advantage over the whites on clean, dust-free rock.

Pinks use a more sticky, softer compound. While they inherently will offer more grip, they will also pick up dust and lose traction because of it.

Use accordingly.

Im glad someone knows something about rubber !! :lmao::lmao:

Thanks to Krawler23 - I just ordered an XR-10 from Tower Hobbies delivered to my door for $144.96

Krawler - I used a different promo code 014235. It did the same as your code - $15 off - but did not have to join the Super Club.

You say that like being in the Super Saver Club is a bad thing. lol

I have saved a few hundred dollars with the better coupons over the past year and a half by having that $10/year membership. Well worth the price, especially when it would have been the same price either way for you. "thumbsup"

Mudcat - Thanks for the post. I think I will do like you and go bushings from the start. I see you are running 3S. So do you beleeie that with the bushing mod I will be okay to run 3S. I want to run 3S but have heard 2S is so much easier on drivetrain. Are you running 1 esc or 2? I think I wanna go 35T just for a little more speed thru the trails.

Omega. Yea price ended up the same. I just buy very little from Tower. Great selection but prices always seem just a hair off to me. Thanks.

I have had my XR on preorder and comp as often as we have comps here in Reno. Parker puts us through some very trying courses and up until NAT's I didn't have any failures other than rod ends. I lost two bearings in the front and wiped out a step gear at NAT's. I run 45T motors on 3s lipos and not afraid of driving hard but I do drive slower than most. I have only added VP Knuckles, HR C's and replaced the kit bearings with Avid's but all stock size. I may have been lucky but I think most of it is from my driving style. I did set the motor plate bearings in with thread locker to keep them from moving in the plate and covered the plate bearings on the backside with a sticker to prevent dirt/dust from entering the bearings. Good luck and have fun.

The intial Q asked here is exactly my thoughts as a newbie looking to buy a my 1st crawler..... isn't the point of a crawler to crawl? Like, to be able to go up to a silly steep incline and do it? Or a crazy unlevel pile of rocks and snake your way over it with grace? :ror:

I mean if you wanna bash over some bumps or small rocks or motor up a hill why buy a crawler? My Savage Flux can do that stuff. But it can't roll p to a 70 degree incline and crawl up r cruise over crazy uneven terrain.

bbking9 - thanks for the post it saved me some time - will this promo code work for anyone?

Well, so far - I'm on track.

XR10 Kit from Tower for $145 shipped
Used FX-R for $50
Set of HB Rovers for $28 ($12 less than planned)
Avid bearings to upgrade and replace all in motor plate and trans case $14

Still need 2 motors, servo and BEC.

Spent so far $237. May need to get some small lipos as i doubt my 2000mahs are gonna fit.

We'll see where I end up. Looking good to date though.

rchuffer, if it worked for me - it should work for you. I'm just not sure if there was an expiration date.

Thanks it's worth a shot. $145. for a new crawler sounds good to me. I've got everything for it - minus the bearings for the motor plate and trans case. Dont forget to post up some pictures of the build. Have fun and be safe.

There are so many build threads already. Doubt anyone wants to see my cheapo version.

For the bearings - check Avid bearings. I ordered - but made a mistake and a guy named David there jumped right on it for me. $1 a piece. They also have some of the larger ones you'll need call revolution. unshielded on one side, shielded on the other.

The revolutions are actually metal shielded on one side, rubber shielded on the other. The rubber shield faces the outside as it keeps dust out better, and the metal shielding on the inside where it is protected from the dust better. They do it because metal shields have less resistance.

Well I've never owned a xr10 so I can't speak on it. I have seen em in action and they are great. Id say $400 (including kit) should get ya atleast out on the rocks. But the ax10 I have had for years. Yes its not a moa so there is a few more limits. The rtc ax10 you can find for $219 "thumbsup". Add $28 for rovers, $65 for the swx chassis or the gc-3a chassis and your on your way to a great shafty. Personaly imo, you will be in the ax10 at half the price of a xr10. One thing you always have to remember, its your money, your rig and your hobby so do what you want with it "thumbsup".

Yea, the AX10 was always an option, but by my account it needed a new servo as well and that would put it even with the XR10. I will be well under $400 on this XR10 when I am done. Of course it helped to already have a 3ch radio.

$100 esc, punk dig $?, 2 decent motors $60, tires $30, ok servo $60, bearing mod $?, bec $20, xr10 kit $150 =over $400... Unless you get tons of used parts that aren't gonna last that long (food for thought: used parts = less use by you) this build is gonna cost you some decent coin man. all I listed was the basic of the basic.

@ bbking i noticed you said that you had a 2000 mah battery and you thought it wouldnt fit. i saw on youtube of a vid where you take the screw out that holds the rear links to the axle, drill a little hole through it and use that as a body clip/pin design. then just slide your battery in. btw he was using 2200mah. hope this helps. also let me know how this works if you do it because i am unsure of what size battery i want.

You're close mudd. got my FXR for $50 - not $100. No dig. 2 - Holmes sports motors are $64 (likely the ones I'll go with). When I was looking at AX10 rtc they were $270 - never saw any for $219. Don't worry - guaranteed I'll be under $400. I've got some tricks up my sleeve too - you'll see when I'm finished.

krawler - dude - I need to check that out. what did you search on on youtube. I thought I had seen every XR10 video on there.

BTW - Tower is shipping my replacement XR10 today that UPS lost. They were right on top of it. Great Customer Service.
