Is it worth it to setup a winch down suspension?

why isn't this seen more on RC crawlers? I have seen a few videos which i think are from japan via youtube showing off with their winch down rigs. I am curious how its all mounted and how it works.

If i could use a winch down setup that would allow me to run the truck any height i want, are there any comp rules banning me from building something with say, 6" of GC and then be able to winch it down so it almost scrapes the ground?

I understand droop kind of does this, but this way, it seems the springs would help to push the wheels down to the ground rather than gravity alone.

So, basically, i guess i am asking why don't more people do it and the people that do, what are the different ways to do it?

I've seen a few people do this to there 2.2 rigs but it kinda became a problem just because there is not that much room in the chassis to mount a standard size servo. In addition, it KILLED there run time on the battery because they were now running 3 servos (steering, dig, winch down servo). It's a cool idea but i don't really see it working out to well in a 2.2, maybe it would work out better in a super.

Not sure how well it would work on RC but have done it a bunch on my Jeep and it really will get you out of a bind. It actually changes the whole "attitude" of the rig it will greatly improve your center of gravity on the front end on steep and especially off camber climbs. I just run a small chocker on my front axle and hook winch to it witha clevis if you can run it with a good bit of slack until you need it and retain regular suspension travel.

that and you need 4 channels, and most wheel radios won't do it
FWIW , I run a DX6 radio, so still got a few channels to work. Would be curous to see how others setup the winch, seems like the spring centered right stick would be handy, run it up and down perhaps?

Venom Creeper with front and rear remote dif locks, CC BEC, Sidewinder esc, 6ch RX, and will have the dig setup when that comes out in a bit.

Would a servo on the rear axle work, mounted almost like a rear steer, and be able to lower the front and rear at the same time?

i run a winch down in my super and it works very well i can go up steeper hills that i could not make befor

I think winchdowns, or atleast the thoughts of winchdowns are starting to come back into popularity. Do it! I think that they could be better now than a little while ago. Maybe you could figure out a system where one macho servo mounted in the center of the rig can move a custom shock mount that actually moves the shock location so you can keep the articulation when you have the low ground clearance. So many things to experiment with!

i run a droop setup at 2-1/4" GC and havent encountered a breakover i couldn't get up (straight links, delrin skid, just slides over stuff).

I see the possiblities of a winch down suspension but have yet to see one executed in a way that makes it worth while.

would be cool, but violates this rule I believe:
2.1.5 -
All suspension mounting points must be fixed mounted. This includes all link mounts, and

shock mounts.

I did this "thumbsup"

I think that regulable suspension is a very good system and you will be able to get places you couldn't before.. I build my own a few months ago, but i didn't use a winch. My mechanism was a little different (as tom tom said).

Look at this..

But you have huge tires Joe, lol. That is where the magic resides.

thats a sweet setup! do you have any pictures to share for ideas? is that setup comp legal with regard to the mount points moving?

I ran a suspension winch on my TLT comp rig for about a year and really liked it."thumbsup"

I run a Berg now so I really don't have the room on the chassis for another servo.

I have been tossing the idea around again though. I have a Multiplex 403 so I still have 4 more channels, in addition to the three I am already using, to work with.

Our forum is closed for maintenance. I hope we have it running tomorrow. Then I will give you the URL because today it doesn't work.
But it's a spanish forum. Maybe you will not understand a word:mrgreen:

Wait a momment, i will search in my photobucket album.

Interesting setup having the shock mounts pivot. I don't know if it would fall into the USRCCA rules as allowed.

that is way cool setup. wishing i had a cnc to build fun stuff like that.

is there anything of rc size which could work as a shock spacer perhaps that would allow for something like this?
