Default red wrangler rebuild

hey all, back at it again.
this time it's with another project that i will complete.

i while back i picked up this little gem in a local trade for my son, we traded his old red courier for it.
My 1.9 YJ scaler

here's a few pics if your not into thread surfing and just want to scan.
TLT axles, axial tranny, tamiya body on a custom steel chassis with metal work done by me

when we got it the links needed help. it was binding and i wasn't too excited about the way the body was mounted. take a look at the last pic you can see the body sagging one direction and the chassis actually sinking the other.
i have been letting my son use my other rigs, but with the new addition of the ORV park we are building out back i decided that it's time to hook him up with his heap.

besides, it wouldn't be right for me to finish my builds if i didn't actually hook up the boy.

first i made an upper link mount that would place the links higher, and still be able to use his axle mounted servo.

that worked better, but i still didn't like it.
so i made a rear upper link mount.

still was not what i wanted.

so we started by tearing the old chassis out from under the jeep and replacing it with custom steel rails i picked up from fred off RCC.

and i added some shock towers, some sliders, and i capped off the front end of the frame head.

while i was at it i decided that i liked how the Rock Cop had the tranny clocked sideways and mounted this one very similar. again all metal done by me.

made sure it had a beefy belly skid for the boy.

next up....
the body work and tail light woes.

got to work on those pesky tail lights.
wasn't up for hunting around, and at least something had to be round on this jeep to make it manly.

more to come.
gotta go eat !

~~ update !!! ~~~

well it's been a little bit, but i have been pecking away at this thing a little bit every night.

my son was over this weekend and i was not going to quit until he had at least seen the body mounted. the body is screwed to the chassis and the mounts are good and stout.
i used the two holes in the front grill ( stock location ) but hid them behind a dead 3R winch. the rear are hidden behind the tire carrier. the more i worked on it the faster it went along. the body is all smooth and painted in the back, it has also been stiffened up with another layer of styrene.

i have a few little finishing touches to add, but he got more than to see it sitting together.

i got it running !!!! he was sooo stoked, and i have to admit i am one jealous dad. this little jeep came out quite nice. big thanks to all the guys who have built some pretty sick jeeps before me at this forum and my other favorite. i've learned a lot the past couple of years, and here is my contribution to the gang.

on to the pics.

the obligatory flex on tires shots...

he is happy, tell him cut that hair !
( kidding sonny, we won't tell them you hide a helmet under there. )

ok now to outside trail shots...

thanks all for looking, and the for inspiration to not just half hack my son together a rig and to give him something to be proud of.

Default what material

this is a beautiful build btw.

im a bit of a noob, but i wanna start making my own parts, namely a better frame to replace my high lift rails.

what material did you use for your linkage mount? i wanna say aluminum but not sure because everything else was steel. right? i'll probably limit myself to use aluminum because it'll be easier to work with.

well whatever it is, where did you get it? roughly how much could i get it?
and what did you use to cut certain parts, and weld?

again sorry for the noob question but this is a real nice build.

Thanks man !!!!

it's easy to do. just look at a few pics around here and copy someone's idea, or do what i do, and use all the best ideas mixed into one hodge podge. throw it out on the forums and see what people reply to. sometimes people are too busy trying to build their own stuff so we forget to reply.

anyways, the rear link mount is aluminum. i picked up a small length of flat bar that was 1/2 inch wide and 1/8 inch thick from home depot, and i also picked up a mini hack saw and two packages of blades and a cheapie set of files. i just measured and eyeballed where i thought the links should be and wham, made it work. then i went back after i got everything drilled out cemetrically off the center line, i just cut off the extra wasted metal around the edges. in fact i was supposed to drill the " speed hole " things that everyone is doing now on the scalers, but i forgot

much to my surprise the little hack saw really rips it up on aluminum and on steel, and the files i use for all non oil metal work and some for my styrene work.

the front upper link mount was made from 3/16" brake line, a small piece of 1/4" flattened out for the upright, and a tlt link mount. all my steel i braze together with the new alternative to map gas and a pencil tip bernzomatic torch. i used to use harris brand 45% silver solder, but now have switched to weldcote wire.

have a look at my first scaler from a few years back.
this was before i could braze.
Meet Crunko

then look at my more recent builds, this and my Car 61, the Rock Cop and you can see that just hanging out in a forum like this and my other favorite can push you to new levels.

take a few minutes and poke around... this forum is loaded with guys that possess some serious talent. good luck with your builds and don't be afraid to ask for opinions, cause on this site your gonna get them whether good or bad lol.
