| n00b's Austin Gipsy RC4WD Gelände II
I got a box in the mail yesterday. In that box was a box. And in that box was another box. What a box! This is the new Gelande II model of box. It's made by RC4WD and looks pretty awesome. It has plastic wrap around it to keep it fresh and free from scratches. The theme of this particular box is silver truck. The truck says DEFENDER on it. That must be the driver's name? In addition to pictures of silver trucks, the box has a compass and words. A lot of words! This box reminds me of the Trail Finder 2 box in both quality and features. I don't want to speak too soon, but I think this could be the box of the year. Move over Twin Hammers box, there's a new sheriff in town and its name is Gelande II. I'm a pretty serious box collector so I like to keep mine in showroom condition, but this box was just begging to be opened. I got my knife and cut the factory seal and this is what I saw inside... A book and pieces of something. What on earth is this thing? I thought to myself, "You've gone this far n00b, let's keep going." I agreed with myself and pulled the first layer of foam and pieces out. MORE PIECES?! By now I'm getting a little nervous, will this box ever end? It does not. More pieces. I cleared the parts and pieces out and saw another box staring at me. What a relief. But darn it if I didn't get curious again and I tore it open. Plastic truck thing? I guess you are supposed to build it or something? Weird. Ok, I'll give it a try. Then I stopped the box antics and got down to business. I grabbed all the drivetrain parts and gave them a close inspection. Hammer transfer case, R3 single speed transmission, Cast Yota II axles. Beautiful. I removed the third member on the axles to check for grease. They had some from the factory, but I wanted to add some more. I did the same for the transfer case and transmission. The transmission and transfer case have some pretty gnarly hardened gears in them. They should hold up quite nicely. Pre-mounted 1.9 Dirt Grabbers on steel wheels. Saves time and energy. The all new chassis. Machined aluminum bumpers. Labeled bags of hardware ready to go. Gotta love that! I tried something different for the chassis and drivetrain build. Have a look, it won't take much time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQw2WoNTs3Q Stay tuned for the body! Last edited by pardonmyn00b; 01-13-2014 at 03:50 AM. |

Thanks! Sorry for the lack of updates, but this should explain what I've been up to. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbNCKG-Ky3Y Everything's as it should be, I just filled in the windows. Why? Because I don't like painting the window trim. The main color is Krylon Navy Blue. I Plasti Dipped the roof and trim pieces. The stripes come with the body kit.

Hi the truck looks great with the back windows closed! I had a little question though. How does the body mount onto the chassis? Is it four screws 2 on each side?

Instead of eating on my lunch break I took the Gelande out for a test drive. Fun was had by all. I'm used to top heavy scale trucks so I don't expect much, but the truck did pretty well and surprised me a few times. The tires grabbed dirt and kept it moving in a forward direction. I also enjoyed the approach and departure angles. In conclusion, this is a nice truck. It looks good with dirt on it.

Awesome job n00b, that's a pretty sweet Rover, loving the blue and the solid sides!!! Do my eyes deceive me or is that a V2 ARB bumper on the upgrade side of that awesome box? Better be, RC3wd really dropped the ball on the old one. Ben |
