Ok, I guess I’m done torturing everybody, it’s time to reveal the secret body! I’ve always been on the search for the most scale realistic RC car and reading how people are “denting” there lexan and poly bodies to create “trail damage” , as cool as it is, made me say F-that! If I want trail damage I want to get it ON the trail! So that, combined with the fact that I’ve been working on this idea for years no and that I’m a crazy Mo-Fo, ( just ask anyone that knows me) I came up with this creation. Yes, you guessed it. That body is all metal! Aluminum to be exact, and trust me it dents just like the real thing. Now does the tires and chassis configuration make sense So in fact everybody was wrong! It wasn’t the type of body (I actually gave that hint a while back when I mentioned an F-150) but the material that was top secret. Everything on the body was formed by hand over wooden molds and I’ll detail the process later. Now this didn’t just come out of the blue, I’ve been making cars out of aluminum for almost 25 years (and I’m only 30), everything from matchboxes to RC’s. I already have 3 2WD trucks with the same bodies that I’m preparing to race at a local dirt track next summer. Here is a sample of one: And what the damage can be like This is just the first 1/10 scale crawler I’ve tried. It should be in paint by the end of the weekend and I’ll get some quality pics when it’s done. If you think this one is crazy you ain’t seen nothing yet! My next body will be even more detailed with opening doors, lights, and a complete interior and will be a replica of my 1:1 truck A 1976 full size Cherokee. Ultimately I’ll be making 2 trucks. One that will be nearly exact in scale for light trail duty and one that’ll sport a 4 link with coils and either 1.9 or 2.2 wheels and tires for heavy trail use. well I hope it was worth the wait for everyone. I can’t wait to get it out there and make some dents! |

It looks really wide but the carnage is awesome. Make yota bodies for us all to mangle and you'd be set to retire by 35.

Well, working with this material isn't without it's risks. Last night while I was making the last body preperations before paint I was drilling the last hole for the rear panel and the bit caught some of the glue holding it together and this happened I sat there in disbelief for a few minuts Then I got so mad it made me sick! :-( After throwing some thing and going for a walk I decided I guess I needed to fix it so instead of getting it painted, I spent the whole night fixing the damage. First I removed the offending material Here is what the piece looked like after I removed it and tried to un roll it Then I fixed the floor and made a patch panel. Once glued in place It looked pretty good for a patch but not as nice as it was:-( Well Sht happens and you gotts move on. At least I did this before I painted it either way it'll be ready for the comp this weekend. |

You got some skills, buddy How thick is that aluminum? Looks like it's not much thicker than foil? |

Man that is awesome. Like everyone else said, the damage looks very realistic. Would suck putting all that time into make it just to see it get destroyed, but atleast it looks good while it happens, lol.

Thanks for the props guys The aluminum is actually baking pans. Like the disposable ones you buy for cooking. It's much heavier than regular aluminum foil. Scale wise it's about perfict as far as i'm conserned. I can handle the body without it caving in on me until it's mounted. you wouldn't pick up you're real car with the fenders would ya? |
