Talking Bunce's open class scaler

Hi Guys! My name is bunce and i have been a lurker and learner here for a while. I have an scx-10 which i have loved driving and modding for the last couple of years.

Now i want to build a scaler from the ground up, and i want to build it in the image of an open class 4wd racer.

Coming from Melbourne, Australia our 4wd race events have a few classes, and the one with the least amout of modding rules is called open class. The biggest toughest baddest trucks drive this class and its a gruelling test of engineering and stamina.

here is (a bad) photo of an open class 4wd racer:

I have been doing heaps of research and am planning on building it off the MODELEX Hilux truggy chassis.

I also plan to do a double throw down & CMS on the front end for a better scale appearance and better ride.

Parts list as planned:
Chassis Truggy Hilux MAXI-PRO
HPI 87634 REDUCTION GEAR BOX SET
4link Axle mont ALU Black
Yota Ultimate Scale Cast Axle Front & Rear
King Off-Road Scale Piggyback Shocks w/Faux Reservoir (110mm)
T1 Disruptor Black Transfer Case (2.18:1 Gearing)
Outcry Crawler Speed Controller ESC with TurboBEC
The Ultimate Scale Shocks 100mm (Silver)
Level 3 rc scx-10 lift kit (for double throw down)
Discontinued vanquish deadlocks
1.9 pitbull rock beasts

I have a few questions before i start ordering though.

Are the yota axel housings tough enough for this build? I see they are a lot smaller than other axels which i like because of the better clearance & a more scale look. But i worry about the axels that ill be able to put inside.

Thanks for reading and please let me know what you think. This thread will become my build thread once everything starts arriving in the mail.

cheers.
bunce.

I'm a little lost as to what size links I'll need to get. Can someone with some building experience shed some light on this one for me please?

Greatly appreciated

I was unsure what wheel base I needed so for the moment I'll run my axial axle until I can work out what links to buy for yota axel. Then I'll buy ultimate scale yota axel.

Cool Re: Bunce's open class scaler new pics!

Got some more goodie in the post today from RcModelEx

so i thought it was time to mock up a car for you guys

and then i got to work on that sneaky double throw down i was so keen to do, I used the level 3 rc suspension lift kit upside down to get the mounting and high positioning right. They took a bit of chopping and i also chopped them more after i took this photo :

and now for the money shot:

Im still waiting for the axels in the mail so ill put the trans, motor and transfer case in on sunday.

thanks for reading!

That is a nice looking chassis. Anxious to see it come together.

I have not used them myself but I have heard/read that they are not as durable as some others.

They may take some extra care in setting them up, making sure they are shimmed correctly.

I would go with something else, I like the D44's myself. Then you would have gearing options, U/D O/D HD gears. But they are not cheep

Hello loyal readers ;)

Getting fairly excited about.t how this thing is turning out. I took these photos the other day as i was getting the suspension right and looking at the electronics. As of the morning i had about ->| |<- this much knowledge of how to do RC electronics. However i took some time to learn how to do it and managed to set up (albeit slowly and tediously reading manuals) the electronics from head to toe, then proceeded to pull them all apart to plasti-dip the lot, which are now drying in my basement.

No photos of the electronics until they are all re-installed and secured.

just these with the roll cage

Hello loyal readers

After the plasti-dip dried i got to work organising the wires with zip ties, and then all weather double sided tape to secure them down. The zip ties do such a good job holding everything together than didn't need to do too much work securing the wires down to the chassis, enjoy:

Let me know what you think:

Its been a huge learning curve with the electronics. Ill have to pull the steering servo out now, and pull it apart, grease everything, then plasti-dip it once its back together to make sure its also water resistant.

No a TVP chassis is like a stock AX10 or comp chassis.

No comps where i live so don't need to stick to any regulations. i just like how to 1:1 comp trucks look so wanted to make it look like them.

new pics next week. waiting on 3 link kit for the front & hardware.

Hello loyal readers ;)

I got working on the rear end today, the only thing left to do is to install the rear drive shaft. Put some tires on it and did a bit of a flex test. Let me know what you think.

This is what it looks like from the side. I'll need to add some weight to the back to level out the suspension. I mocked up the front (awkwardly) today to see how the suspension responds. It was lucky i was so adamant to do the double throw down as the car is quite heavy and the extra suspension is really needed. It'll be nice and planted on the rocks

I also put the steering servo through a dip of the PLasti-Dip so its all good to go!

thanks for reading
