Default Defender 110 Single Cab

Hello again Gents (and possibly girls!)

Sam has started another project. Some of you will have seen this on Facebook already.

I recently purchased a Gelande II D90 kit at roughly the same time that the 110 kit was released. I prefer the 110 of any configuration, but couldn't spring for the pricetag of the 110 kit (especially with the exchange rate of our dollar at the moment too). So figured I'd start with the 90 and modify it from there. I have the 110 frame on it's way instead of the kit issued 90.

Like many members here, i wanted to build something that is typical to what you'd see on the roads around my local area. From my experience, 110's are more popular here than 90's and as you've seen already from build's such as Delux's flatbed, Ute's of any make are an Australian icon! So here's my project.

i started kinda backwards, doing what work i could while waiting for parts to arrive. Started with part of the tray accessory, based entirely on measurements. A lot of reading, re-reading, checking my 90 body, checking with other owners. A hint here, RC4WD quote the length of the D110 body on their website as 570mm......wrong!! After getting H2Micro to measure his, it's more like 510mm!! Good thing I checked before starting that!

So Sam started with the cage that will sit on top of the tray.

Mesh from a magazine holder from my local office supplies warehouse.

The top like that is unfinished. The four corner parts that stick up too far will be trimmed and there will be diamond plate added to the top, and possibly a roof rack.

Many of the joints had a hole drilled and a tube glued in, much like you'd do in woodworking. This structure has turned out surprisingly extremely rigid.

And next it was time to add side doors.

And the other side.

The padlocks: styrene and a paperclip.

Sadly, the body arrived with a gaping hole in the roof.

But luckily, they provided a template to use to fill it in.

More finishing work has been done, I just haven't photographed it properly!

Now we get to the more interesting part and bringing this build up to the current point, so it will be in "real time" from here.

I'm using the rear window kit from Thescalerstore.com in Italy to do the conversion to the single cab.

Offically my first experience with 3D printed parts and I must say, I am extremely impressed with the quality and fit. They've really done their homework in designing these parts to fit perfectly to the body.

Here we go, it's now or never Sam!

After some filing and sanding, the roof section was fitted.

A pretty close match up even before I did any finishing.

Time to do some fine tuning of matching the join. First the gutters.

And a mock up of the overall look.

Shaping up to be a very sharp looking build. I recently purchased the rear cab section for my next build, so I was wondering what glue you are using to bond the 3D part to the styrene?

Thanks. i'm using CA. Styrene solvent won't work as the 3D printed parts are maybe ABS or nylon or something.

Got the tray mounted up tonight. It uses the upper shock mounts and some bracketry I made up from alu angle and styrene.

Countersunk screws on the top as these will be covered by the diamond plate.

Those big chunks of styrene will be mostly covered up by everything else going on, so won't looks so clunky in the end!

And a nice little hidden away yet easily accessible spot for the battery.

Some more progress on the cage. It will be removable, so I can change the cargo or whatever whenever I like. Had to work out a way to secure it though and still have accessible screws or mounts or whatever. I cut 2 holes in the roof to fit a screwdriver, then used magnets to hold on the diamond plate. Here you can see magnets holding the inner magnets in place while the glue dries.

And slowly getting there with the roof.

The roof is coming along. It's at a point that looks fairly good to me (to my dodgey eyes anyway!). This is my first serious work using putty so i'm still feeling my way as I go. The 3D printed parts needed a lot of finishing and being a harder plastic, I was getting nowhere trying to sand the lines out, so thought it best to fill the surface. I think it took about 5 applications of Tamiya putty with sanding in between each to get to this point.

I guess it's when I apply primer that will be the true test right?

Still a hole to fill in this pic!

Thanks guys!

Fitting of the back wall of the cab and window.

The window is clear plastic saved from some packaging of some sort, glued in with CA.

For the real wall, first a piece of 2mm styrene sheet was added to fit inside of the body. The bottom of the rear window piece has a lip that this fits into. Angle was added to the inside for strength.

Then 2 more layers of 0.5mm sheets were added to cover the joins on the sides and overlap the edges. These were then trimmed off.

Some finishing touches were added to fill in some gaps at the bottom of the window section at the corners and some strips were added to the rear wall just to add a bit of texture, these will mostly be covered, but anyway!

I believe this signifies the end of the body construction phase. Maybe some more finishing of the roof join will be done after primer is applied.

Progress made in the way of paint. Still gotta do the window seals.

I was having this conversation just the other day...I don't think I've ever seen this version of the Landy in any other colour other than white around my local area. So why break tradition?!!!

I'm pretty happy with that join!

Thanks.

Have started doing some weathering. I am taking it real easy as i don't want to overdo it against the white.

So far I've used an earth wash from Games Workshop called Agrax Earthshade and a purchased pre-mixed blackwash.

I totally botched up the windscreen in more ways than one! So will be ordering another one and not much more weathering will be done until I get it. i don't want to get a mismatch! How embarresment!

This turned out nice though....

Some more progress.

Apart from a couple of practice runs on some scrap, this is my first time soldering brass. Feeling quite pleased with myself I am!

Needs a bit of clean up, but overall, not bad!

And another peek at the final goal...
