Justin vs Scott Class Three Build Off - Scott's take on Short Fuse

As some of you probably know, my recent class three I built for Nationals had a lot of tire rubbing issues and after switching it over to a Class Two for Day Two it worked out much better as a Class Two rig. So I decided to keep it as a Class Two rig and build a new Class Three rig.

This got Justin and I thinking. What if we did a build off. After chatting for a bit, Justin and I decided to do a Class Three build off. More of a re-build off as both these chassis's have been together before.

The deadline is May 15th the date of our next WARCRC comp. Photos will be taken then and then there will be a voting thread.

We are both putting up $50 and that money will be donated to a food bank of the winner's choice.



I recently acquired Sam's Short Fuse and will be putting that back together. Justin will finally be putting together his old chevy.

Most of the wraith axle parts should arrive today. Not sure if I'll get to assembling them though. I'm still trying to clean up my hobby area from my National's builds and don't want to make a bigger mess than I already have.

Calling up the local powder coating companies and getting quotes on sand blasting and powder coating the cage. Might as well do it right the first time.

Some color sequences I've considered:
Orange Panels/Black cage
Orange Panels/White cage - cboggs idea
Maroon/purplish panels/white cage
Black panels/Orange cage

Sams chassis is awesome, i got to watch him run at 2014 scale Nats and it was impressive!!



I say Orange panels White chassis. Here is a buggy i built for my buddy Ammon awhile back, he just had it Powdercoated White and i think it looks neat with the colors he chose!!

It is really cool and really lightweight! Plus its a proven winner! That's a pretty cool buggy!

Called up the powder coating company, sounds like it will be pretty cheap. $50 or less. I'm going to go with a white cage and then paint some sample styrene sheets to get a feel for the colors and then paint the panels.

Time to get the chassis ready for powder coating, going to drop it off tomorrow. They said the turnaround time is about 2 weeks. So I'll have to get everything else done by then. Then I'll have about two weeks to get it assembled and ready to go!

Wow, this could be interesting! The toughest thing for the new owner will be the "packaging" right for this little guy.

Scott-- my winch was a home brew savox 1230 with a locked up spool. I cut the uneeded part of the case away to make it all fit. Savox servos are cool for this because the lower part of the case doesn't really support the motor like on hitek. There's two screws that go in through the top gear case into the motor. The 1230 is a cheap torque monster as well.

The other thing you asked about was the battery location. At one point I had it skid mounted but it seemed dangerous since it took so damn long to dissconnect in the event of an electrical issue. I moved it to the center removable console, just use a little piece of foam to make it snug in there. It's fit around a max amps 900 but fits all the common 850 ish mah packs as well.

Tires are yours, I will pm you.

In capable hands I sure would hate to compete against this thing, mostly why it was sold to be honest. Kind of like bringing a gun to a knife fight, until mg200 brings his gun anyways lol!

I was looking at it last night, I have a preliminary layout in my head for the electronics. Looks like there is just enough room.

Gotcha, that makes sense with how the space is there for the winch. I was thinking about just running a KMS winch the other way. I will take a second look at that tonight before I strip it down for powder coating.

That location makes sense, nice and easy access. Good thing I have some 850s lying around!!

Started stripping it down to the cage:

First off is the skid.

Then the body panels:

I think the interior was the only thing that was a tad difficult to get out, really just had to spin it a bit.

And lastly the pan hard bar had to be removed:

Since I had the dash out, I decided to add a little flair to the steering wheel (I think Sam had one of these steering wheels in it when he ran it):

First time ever using wraith axles for a scaler. I've always used the wide XR SCX axles.

So I decided to look and see which way axial said to install the ring and pinion, and it's opposite of what a SCX10 is. I found this weird, ignored it and installed it the way I wanted to:

No, I'm leaning towards a silver cerakote cage and deep maroon panels. I have to go paint shopping to find the panel color.

Cage dropped off, going with a sparkly silver with a clear powder coat. Cerakote was going to be more than I wanted to spend and the powder cost wasn't bad at all. Plus I had to have the old paint removed anyways.

I'll stop by the auto stores tomorrow and look for paint for the panels.

Nice, added benefit is that when it gets chopped up it will still look good.

Hey Scott, here are some "packaging" pics I dug up. Now that I look at these, make sure you mount the front shocks similar to this, otherwise you may have clearance issues.

Can wait to see this all cleaned up with your own spin on it
