I have toyed with the idea. There is a local medical supply that has liquid nitrogen and was thinking of getting a container to play with. Maybe I will have to do that for testing purposes and see if there is a difference. Just have to make a container for the process. Whats another process, already have a anodizing tank, titanium tank, whats a cryo tank gonna hurt.......

I figured it was some hoss motor, a normal 540 brushed probably wouldn't twist the shaft like that.

Good to see our axles holding up to some serious abuse.

We originally made them from stainless for the ductility of the material. I personally have lost an entire wheel, tire and axle during a comp, and had it roll away becuause of a brittle axle. While the stainless may bend, it is highly unlikely it would shear off completely. This is evidenced by what you see in the first pic of thread.

I have only installed a single set of our straight axles in any of my rigs. When I take a serious fall onto one of the rear wheels, and the axle bends slightly, I just grab the wheel and bend it back straight. No repair, no additional points, no problem.

That said, we do have some straight axles on the way for the AX10, TLT and Wheely King made from exotic materials. Our ultimate goal is to provide people with an axle that will not bend or shear off. We are confident that what we have coming will do just that.

Nice work Rocksmith.

I would. It's not like the bend easily, and if they do, you just bend them back. In the past 3 months I have had to straighten a rear wheel mabey 4 times. And that is from falling onto concrete from more than a few feet off the ground.

A testament to the material you are using Rockpiledriver. I was really amazed that even with that kind of twist it didnt shear, any other material would have twisted right off.
And beleive me I wasnt being nice to my rig when this happened. I told everyone standing around to stand back cuz I didnt know what was going to blow first. And when it did blow up it was quite a sight. When it did pop my rig jumped in the air about a foot when it unbound.
So anyone thinking of getting RCP axles, they are tested tough by me!

You guys are making some great products. Lets see some Ti rear straight axles. Is Ti likely to bend or sheer off?

as far as cryo treating them, what all is involved? We have 74K gallons of liqiud nitrogen on tap where i work and we burn through around 40K gallons a day. do you just bathe them in liquid nitrogen?

No. If you drop temp that fast it will usually develope stress cracks.

Drop temp at around 1f a minute till you get to 356f below which is liquid nitrogen temp. Then you hold it there for 30 hours then come back up slowly. It rearranges the carbon atoms in steel and is more beneficial to steel. It does help in aluminum and Ti, just not as much. Looks like Im gonna have to build a tank and some valves to do a lil experimenting........

I've had my RCP straight inner and outer axles for several months with many falls and so far they have been great, but I would like a set in some really good steel.

I'm running 8-cell GP1100 2/3A cell pack that I built with battery bars, high-strand count copper wire, Deans' connectors, 45 turn Integy lathe motor, 2.2 Rock Claws, and stock Axial gearing.
