Always better to run BEC. Very easy to install.

Alexis
The CC BEC is one of the few specialist things that you can actually buy in the UK and not pay the earth for it.
Roundabout often have them for around £20

Not really. Thats about the same as the one that is built into the esc's. The CC bec is rated for more than 3 times that amperage.

You could run ti without a BEC and see what you think, you can always add a BEC later if you feel the servo needs a dedicated power supply.

It won't hurt anything doing it that way, but everyone eventually comes to the realization that they need one. We ask a lot of our servos so they need to be powered properly.

I disagrees that "everyone" decides they need one. It all depends on what you are doing. My crawlers are strictly for play and I do not seem to have any issues running without a BEC. Alexis may find the same holds true or might decide to add a BEC. All I am saying is that it is not mandatory in all cases.

True, there are some casual crawlers that don't need their rigs to turn when then want them to, or don't put them in the position of needing every ounce of power, but a great percentage of us do.

Haven't had any problem with wheels not steering when I want them to. I have to wonder what the ratio of comp crawlers to those who just are out to enjoy our crawlers is? Probably, like most other forms of RC, the non-comp out number the comp.

I agree that a BEC or any other piece of "upgrade" can be benefical in teh comp arena and can't hurt in the non comp segment, but the question arises; "Yes, it is an improvement, but is is really an improvement that is worth the cost for me?" - I know the bec is pretty low cost - The follow on problem is that very few folks, here and on other sites, grasp the fact that most people actually do not need the latest widget to simply enjoy the RC hobby. I guess it bothers me because I have lost track of the number of times, over the years, I have heard a variation of "..but everyone eventually comes to the realization that they need one" no matter what that "one" item maybe.

Alexis
Try mailing Horizon Hobby direct - they're UK distributors and should be able to tell you which stores have stock.

BEC's are not "the latest widget", they've been out for quite a while, and have become an essential part for crawlers.

If you aren't having trouble steering, then you aren't pushing your rig very hard.

It would be interesting to see how many do and do not use bec's, and how many are casual crawlers vs comp crawlers. Guess its time to start a poll.

I didn't say that I wasn't using a BEC Dude - just not a separate one. I think that I'm lucky at the moment - the servo/motor combo isn't a killier drain and therefore no, I'm not pushing it like a hand wound 35T and a big torque Hitec would allow.

Today, I don't require a separate BEC - tomorrow's a different story!
