shafty weight question

How is everyone getting their shafty to be so light? Is it getting rid of the axial transmission? Is it ar60s vs ax10 axles? Is it some kind of voodoo magic?

The puller motor is supposed to help with the weight loss I'll do a comparison when mine arrives.

Going from a BL to a 2 pc CF wheel will drop a lot of weight. Using the new compact transmissions does save weight too over the stock but not too much. Can also shave weight with plastic drive shafts such as Traxxas max shafts over MIPS or other metal drive shafts. Some pics or part spec can help us more. My sporty weighs in at 4lbs. Was lighter but didn't work too well

My rig weighs 4.4 lbs rtr. I am running a holmes 13t, br mini, a ightened swx chassis , ax10 trans with lightened hr gears, wb8 hd drive shafts,ax10 xr mod axle up front, stock width ax10 with wheel spacers out back, ci wheels with shaved sedonas and 3.5 oz per side of knuckle weight up front. Any suggestions?

Well it looks good and that's not a bad weight. But if you try another more modern chassis I think you drop some weight and have better performance. You can also use aluminum hardware and hollow or aluminum ball ends to shed weight.

I think you are in the ball park I'll get you a RTR weight on my rig asap the weight of my rig you seen the other day was with out battery,wheels or wheel weight ect.

Ok my rig RTR weight is 4 lbs 5oz yes she's a fat pig... but she crawls great.
I could do the same thing swap out steel hollow balls to aluminum hollow balls, steel hardware to aluminum hardware swap out my trans from wraith to ?? to cut a few more ounces but i probably won't any time soon..
if your rig crawls good at your weight keep running it...

From what I can see, a more recent CF or G10 chassis, Voodoos and a Holmes Puller 400 should get you down a few more ounces. The faux reservoirs on the front shocks aren't needed as well.

I'm no expert; but here's what I see just off the top.

The skid is huge, the chassis is huge...

The shocks have the "fake" reservoirs still attatched.....why....they are only a couple grams but it all adds up.

Really start looking at your rig with weight savings in mind.

I see some hardware that's longer than it needs to be.

Those stock Sedona's are sooooo heavy. I love them, but.....narrow rovers or voodoos would drop a lot.

Many things to shave here and there, just a matter of your end goal, fab skills, and budget.

I'm going to say.. You have 2oz of extra wire or wire that's a heavier gauge then needed..
Seriously, I have less wire on my Super! Lol..
You can drop 2oz by switching to a HH 400 or 500 puller.

Maybe with a upgraded front plate, you can mount your electronics all up front. Then you could run less knuckle weight. The only wire from the chassis to the front axle, is your motor wires.

The RX is under the plate, on the driver side.



You can loose the rear wideners and keep your width. Just un screw your wheels from the hubs and switch them side to side and screw them back on. It will give a deep dish look to the rear..

BAM! Your down to 4lbs!

The skid and chassis is heavier then a new one. You'll want to look into a EVO from BmachineRC.(screen name, BDN) ;)

The reservoirs aren't only weight but High weight..

Dona's are a Heavy tire, but shouldn't be horrible since they are shaved.
What foams are you running? If they are old memory foams, they are bricks!

Then of course, aluminum balls and hardware. Which would drop you another oz..

Use plastic spacers for your shocks, at the chassis, instead of those metal washers..

You'll be sub 4lbs in no time!

Thanks everyone. Troy, I run ci foams in the donas comp cut soft in front, medium non comp cut out back.
Is it possible to run ci rims backwards?
Any other suggestions are welcome and much appreciated.

Most stuff has been pointed out already, a newer chassis and Ti links will shave quite a bit from the SWX your running. Cut those resi's off the shocks, lose the metal washers for aluminum, use smaller wire, you can even narrow those Sedona's to drop weight. Aluminum/Ti hardware if your concerned about every last gram, be careful on where you swap it though as you don't want it where you will need the strength of a steel screw. Move as much of the weight forward and as low as you can. Keep in mind light weight rigs take a lot of tuning to get to perform right also, 4.4# is not that bad for RTR.

A stock Voodoo weighs 2.5 oz
A shaved Sedona weighs 3.5 oz

There's 4 oz just in tire choice.
