Looks like oxidation to me. I would hit it with some WD-40 to see if it comes off.

Most likely. I would just lightly oil it to prevent more. What you have there is pretty minor and won't detract from the integrity of the part.

If it really annoys you, take a fine metal brush (or Dremel Stainless Steel brush bit) and brush it off. Then apply a light coat of oil to protect it for the future.

Seeing that they are in the Capra... very likely they never received much ( or any) lubrication. The minimally pitted areas won't effect anything but grease those gears before reinstalling.

What lubricant do you all recommend?

This is what I use on all builds, slow and go fast. It sticks and doesn’t fling off and you don’t need a lot at all so less grease friction. Just my .02 cents

You can use any RC gear lubricant although the two drawbacks that I've encountered with some of these products is outrageous cost vs quantity and grease that is too thin. I use automotive grease and I've seen others use lithium grease, marine grease, etc. I would stay away from really heavy/ tacky grease due to the drag factor but aside from that I don't think you can go too far wrong with whatever you choose.

I use Lucas Marine Grease on all of my metal gears. Available at auto parts stores, Lowes, and Home Depot. Inexpensive and I’ve done dozens of builds and rebuilds and still have more than half of the tube.
