| New Capra Suspension questions
Built my kit yesterday. First kit, lot of fun. I understand a lot of people go to 90mm shocks to lower the cg. Lower cg makes all the sense in the world. Why do it with 90mm shocks, which reduce articulation, instead of using the longer shocks and softer springs, no preload, etc. It seems like going to 90mm just makes it a less capable crawler when you can get the cg lowered by not hamstringing the truck. Right now I have stock shocks with 70wt oil and the purple Axial springs. Feels like I could go up to the reds in the back but I'm not sure yet. Links have just a very slight upward slant towards the skidplate. Help me understand the logic please. Last edited by bexline; 07-02-2020 at 08:10 PM. |

Good question. The reason for shorter shorter shocks and not longer ones run as droop shocks is 2 fold. 1. There is such a thing as too much flex, some flex is good, too much work against you. There is no set in stone rule, but 90* is too much, and it is more of a feel thing. 2. Most people find shorter shocks easier to tune. Before you change out shocks, run the rig and start getting used to the feel of the rig. You can also try element enduro springs, they are shorter and have more spring rates available. Also you can try internally or externally limiting the stock shocks or using limiting straps. Also shocks are one those things that everyone has a favorite or has an opinion on. |

Thanks for the response. Can you explain how too much flex is a bad thing? I don't get that.

In short, too much flex can cause what they call "axle steer" which is when the axle moves in an arc as it articulates.

I’m running stock shocks, 50wt red springs because I’m quick on the trigger and ordered those instead of purple. But it performs quite well, other than a slight leak. Tons of droop and flex Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Where did you find that pic Brake Weight lol Another option is a raised shock mount to essentially lower the rig, which I dont know anything about on the Capra. |

Pen spring mod. Really easy and costs nearly nothing. You'll reduce the ride height by around 30% and the performance return is great to Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |

What wt oil and what outside springs are you using with the pen spring mod? I installed pen springs when I put them together initially but talked myself into getting the droop by using the soft purple springs that axial sells and took the pen springs out. |

I’m running the purple springs in the front and the red in the rear w/70wt oil. I went to a flat skid witch gives you more belly clearance but actually kinda raises the CG. So what i did was moved the shock mounting positions up about 10mm which brings the whole truck back down. I used the HR lift kit flipped upside down for the front and I don’t remember where i got the pieces for the rear.

Would love to hear what those rears were done with. Would love to find some way to get the mounts swapped to metal. No way this plastic is going to hold up to all the in/out of the screws. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk | |

I don’t remember, I think I found them on amain searching for shock mounts. I chamfered the holes so I could use flush screws to clear the shock body. The downside is that i still have to remove the one screw from the plastic to swivel it down to remove the shock screw, because its right behind the cage. But the setup is dialed, just need to remove to refill with oil.

Im also interested in improving the capras suspension. So i did some searching here and google and found some brackets that could be switched from left side to the right and flipped upside down to raise the shocks mounting point. If all goes to plan im hoping to get a capra kit in a few months https://www.gpmparts.com/axial-racin...r-p-18826.html |

Here’s how mine sits. Like i said, i have a flat skid, modded to sit more forward, longer rear links and shorter front, i may try a few more things but what i can say about the capra is that i love driving it, its so much fun. It’s the rig that I always take with, it’s so much fun to drive and tame.
