| I don't want to grow-up, 'caus if I did... The GIRAFFINGO Build
I received these two boxes from Tower Hobbies on 2/14. The Rubicon was a surprise for my son who had been obsessing over it for a while. As usual I figured I would need something for me so I planned to get the Dingo at the same time. So when they arrived he got to take his out and play right away - I have to build mine. The last time I built an RC kit was in '99 when my GF, now wife, bought me a HPI RS4 Rally. As I am much older now I expected this to go smoothly - it did even with the manual's typos. I have been taking my time on this build due to time constraints, about 1-2 hours every other day. Everyone has already seen assembly pics so no need for me to repeat the effort. I did do some reading up on this kit in the 2 days from when I placed the order to when it was delivered. I tired to incorporate the tips and tricks that made sense to me. - Mirrored the transmission - 4 link front and back - Bead lock wheels (no glue! ) For electronics I am borrowing items off my Tamiya Hummer for now. - Novak Terra Claw 55T (WAY too slow, replacing this weekend) - Novak Super Rooster - Hitec 645MG - Losi 2.4 Radio (Orig. from RTR Mini LST) I decided on a paint scheme for the body based on a mix of the Defender X-Tech and Geoffrey. I have yet to find another RC example of the giraffe pattern. Drum roll............. Ta-da! So after drawing a pattern on the over spray mask I applied a few coats to the spaces in between the spots. This proved to an ineffective method so 5 more layers went onto the entire hood and sides. After LOTS of cutting I was left with a shell ready for paint. Corsa Grey went on for the spots, white for the spaces. After removing the over spray film I taped off the body and dash and painted the interior on the exterior of the body Outlaw Black. I was able to get a slight texture look to the black by only dusting it over and over. Also picked up a 5th beadlock and painted it black too. For mounting the body I ground the tip of the body posts flat and epoxied some magnets to them. I then temporarily taped a second set to the inside of the body. Works real good for light duty use. Any real bumps will most likely dislogde it though. I will be adding body clips a la Juswin24 or maybe stronger magnets. Right now I am working on a waterproof'ish box for the electronics and the grill and headlights. The decals just do not cut it for me. This is where it sits today. More to come... I like the unique touch on the body. This is a breath of fresh air from seeing one JK thread after another lately, (and yet a JK still managed to find a way into your thread too, hehe).

I'm really liking the paint job on that Dingo. You did a great job. I look forward to seeing it completed and outside getting dirty. |

Nice paint job, I do not have that much talent or patience. Did you water proof/resist your axles and bearings with some marine grease while you were putting them together? Almost as important as the electronics IMO.

I did not waterproof the axles but I may go back in and do it before hitting serious water. It takes a lot less to wreck the electronics and a lot more $ to replace them. I am a little protective of my '98 Super Rooster too. I love that thing. | |

Progress: I added some weight to the wheels; 4.5oz in the front, 3oz in the rear. I love the way it stay so planted now. I made some headlight bezels out of white styrene, drilled the holes, test fit, then painted them. I hit them with some [too much] heat from my heat gun to dry the paint quicker and then shriveled up like a skinny dipper in the arctic sea. Ruined. So I went to the store and got some black styrene and made them again - no paint needed. The light buckets are 5mm and 10mm LED holders. They secure with nuts and hold the headlight bezels in place. A second piece of styrene was added to the inside of the body to add strength. I might be grinding the holders down a bit, might not. I kind of like the look. I will also be adding a cool lense to the main headlight. This was the inspiration - I also made the grill and grill bezel. The bezel is white and will be painted to match the truck spots - see the Photoshop below. The grill itself is made from metal mesh. To form it I made a second grill bezel and epoxied it to a piece of wood. I then took some metal squares that conveniently were the same size as the grill opening, using a second board applied pressure to them forming the grill shape. Results: Photoshop of painted grill: |

I decided to make the grill come out a little farther so I modified my jig. I have it in place on the truck and glued the bezel in. I can not get the paint to stick to the styrene for the life of me so I gave up for now and am just leaving it white. Pics coming up later... |

I've been sanding styrene with some 200 grit before painting and use Rust-Oleum enamel on my fenderwells. Holds up great, but takes 1-2 days to fully cure. I've painted them with Pactra lexan paint as well with good results. That stuff dries quick since it's a laquer. I think the key is sanding it first so it doesn't have that slick surface. Sand until the styrene is really dull and the paint should stick. Good luck.

I sanded the bezel and tried the Corsa Gray Lexan paint - nope. Cleaned that off and tried white Krylon and let sit for 24 hours. Looked better so I painted the blue spots on again with the Corsa Gray - it had some weird reaction and started pickling and wrinkling up. I will try again later with some real primer. Just had to step away for it for a bit. |

Most recent progress: Replaced all magnets with Rare Earth Neodymium magnets. Strong enough to hold the chassis when I picked the rig up by the cage. Cool stuff. So I felt that I finally had the Giraffingo ready enough to take out and test. My son and I hit up a local creek. All was going well for the first 20 minutes. When the body took a hard bump the body would get loose but then quickly reattach it self. This worked for about 20 minutes of bouncing around on the rocks. Then one magnets brook loose from the epoxy, then another and another until all were off and I was carrying the Giraffingo body. Still had fun with the first outing. I will now be looking at ways to add body clips with putting holes in the hood. Not too concerned about them in the rear since they are well hidden under the spare tire. A couple pics. |

| Re: I don't want to grow-up, 'caus if I did... DINGO Build Thanks! Here is a picture from a get-together this last weekend and some more of the new body mount. The headlights and from markers secure the styrene bracket to the body. Some body posts then drop down from the bracket thru a chassis support and are body clipped underneath. They are sticking out a lot in this pic but have been adjusted since to stick out very little. They don't interfere with the servo, steering linkage, or rocks.I successfully ran this new body mount system at this get together including some big crashes and had no issues. Looks like I found a winner. |

| Re: I don't want to grow-up, 'caus if I did... DINGO Build Recent progress:
Waterproofed Electronics- The ESC and RX were both waterproofed with a combination of brush-on and spray-on liquid electrical tape. Six inch extensions were added to the RX before it was coated. These are labeled for easy identification. The servo with marine grease and spray-on liquid electrical tape. RX ESC ESC Mount - Flat black styrene Hit it with heat gun until soft and then put a bend in it using a block of wood. Do the same on the other side. Clearance at full compression Battery Brackets - Measure and cut the 90 degree aluminum to fit between the shock hoop and transmission. Then paint them black. I shaped one side of each to butt up perfectly to the shock hoop. I also counter sunk the bolt hols which use an existing hole on the frame. One has an extra unused hole. The aluminum is recycled from an older project. Bolt the stock battery tray to the brackets. I marked where the bolt go and counter sunk them into the strap slots. Cleaned Up LED Wiring Shrink tubing and zip ties. The LED controller was also waterproofed with brush-on liquid electrical tape. Bonus: Wheel Weights I picked up some 1/2oz stick on wheel weights from Harbor Freight. I initially put them on as is, flat. They messed with foam too much as I expected they would. I took them out and used a press to put a bend in each one. I'm sure it could be done in a vice with a hammer too. They now hug the wheel really well. This is a used wheel I picked up for another project but you get the idea of how they fit my black Axial 8 hole beadlocks. Low light iPhone pictures are not very good. I will get some better ones this Saturday. Last edited by Debonair; 04-26-2013 at 01:28 AM. |
