Default ESC location

Sorry i didnt search (work got me swamped today)

I picked up a Honcho on CL for pretty cheap.. its RTR with a Traxxas Velineon ESC and Brushless motor.. screaming fast but not my choice.. the rig was never played with. Tires were shiny.. no scraps on body..
Any way..

The esc was placed on the Battery Tray. hence hogging half of the tray.
I have a big ol 5000 mah 2c battery that fits the tray but not with the esc in the way.

So.. for those of you who have a different then the stock (axial) esc.. Where did you mount it? did you make a bracket for it?
its too big to place on the TX box under battery tray.
And it might get hot so close to transmission.

Thanks in advance.
Mark

I made a bracket on the rear side of the motor/trans and mounted it with velcro. I would also suggest not using that esc and brushless motor and go brushed. The drivetrain won't hold up under a brushless system.

I made an "L" shaped bracket out of thin metal. Double stick taped and zip tied it to the back of the receiver box and bent it so it sits right on top of my trans. Ziptied it around the trans case and it keeps the esc up away from debris and excessive water submersion. Working great so I did it to my other rig.

I did the same thing! Except mine is mounted to the rockslider. I have a box on each side, one with the esc and the other with the receiver.

This is what I did:

ESC, receiver and BEC are all mounted on a carbon fiber cut to fit around the steering servo. Keeps it up high and hopefully out of the water and dirt. Being a crawler airflow doesnt really matter.

Dont mind my funky servo setup on top of the tranny. Thats a proof of concept Im working on.

When the esc is mounted in a RadioShack project box, is there ever over heating problems? I had my rtr honcho crawing for about an hour out of the box and the heat sink was so hot i couldn't have my finger on it for more that a second. It hasn't quit on me yet but I would think that is too hot. Also does the project box make it waterproof?

My wife's rig has her esc, bec, and rx in a project box with a hole in the top big enough for the wires to exit..been setup like this for over a year with no heat issues...it's an fxr that was dipped in plasti-dip...the project box won't keep your stuff waterproof unless you seal it up after installing everything. My wife doesn't really get into water alot..so her rx and bec isn't waterproof, just esc...the project box gets water splashed on it and stuff...but it's never submerged...been working good for her..

I cut a hole in the cover of the project box for air to get in to cool the esc.

Using a styrene sheet I built a T-Shaped piece that replaced the stock battery tray. I used the metal piece of the battery tray to place my screw holes through the styrene and just mounted it in stock battery tray location and used esc tape to mount it. Cost me 3$ as that was the price of the styrene sheet. If interested I can post a pic.

I don't go through mud so I put it under the "fuel cell" on the rear cage.
