| motor question
I recently burnt up the stock motor and I am looking for a new motor. What motor is a good choice for my honcho with the stock 87/20 gearing? I do mostly crawling with it. I am not too concerned about speed. I need something kind of cheap but reliable. Please help.

I tried a couple of the cheap RC4WD motors,35&55. Then once I had a good idea what I wanted got a Novak 35t good mix of speed and low end IMHO, and now have spare motors in case me or somebody else blows one up while we're on the trails. Sent from deep underground |

You can use a 35 or 55 with the stock pinion and spur as theses will give you less speed and more torque than a 27t but it may not be optimal gearing to get the most from the motors. I use a custom 27t but with adjustable timing so I can dial speed out and more torque in as I see fit....If you can cough up 35 dollars plus shipping you can get a very good 27 from holmes hobbies that's rebuildable and timing adjustable. otherwise the low dollar throw away motors are your lower cost options...You can get 35 and 55t motors that are rebuildable however ...Just look up Lathe motors and youll see them..most are from Integy and run anywhere from under 30 dollars to over 60 dollars Its fairly cheap to get some pinions and play around with it...just keep an eye on your motor temperatures. Theres a method called the "5-second test"...After running a battery pack out; put your finger on the motor...if you cant hold it there for 5 seconds before it feels too hot and you have to move your finger then its considered to be running a little too hot. I like to use a temperature gun myself but we don't all have access to one. Last edited by 6sharky9; 10-25-2013 at 11:24 AM. |

Holmes Hobbies came out with a nice motor for just this occasion. It's the TrailMaster Sport. It's a 27T motor and it's only $12.00 here's a link. Holmes Hobbies LLC |

I like what sharky said, after you pick a motor start playing with pinions. I've got a good collection now and switch them up depending on the terrain I run, speed for the straight trails and more torque for the wilder stuff.

If you don't go through a good bit of mud and sandy water a better motor that u can rebuild might be a good idea since it should last u a good while before needing rebuilt and save u money in the long run. If your like me and goin as deep as the roof in nasty mud and water then the cheap throw away motors would be my recommendation. I run a mix of the stock axial 27t and 20t motors, holmes trail masters and traxxas titan 21t since they are all less than $20 and I usually only get a few runs a piece.
