Default HH Crawlmaster or Torquemaster for SCX10?

I have a SCX10 rubicon RTR with the stock axial 27t motor in it. i've decided to swap in a different motor, and am debating between the torquemaster and crawlmaster. I would be doing either the 35t for a torquemaster or a 16t for the crawlmaster. Whichever motor I get will be from the "expert" line unless someone can convince me its worth the extra $20 for a handwound "pro" motor.

The truck is used for a mix of general trail riding as well as rock crawling. Probably a 50/50 mix. I will be running a 15t pinion with the stock spur gear. I am leaning towards the torquemaster since it seems to be more of a trail riding motor, but am open to suggestions.

Can anyone offer any advice? Has anyone had both of these motors and offer any input?

I have a torque master 27t sport 540 in my wraith right now and it is awesome! I just bought a 27t torque master pro handwound to put in it and will transfer the sport to my new scx10 rubicon....

The sport should be a much better motor for my rubicon than the stock 27t is. I chose to put the more powerful pro in my wraith since it is heavier than my rubicon....if the past performance of my sport is any indication of the quality and power of the holmes motors then the pro will be excellent!

The CrawlMaster has a 5 pole armature which makes it run smoother at the low speeds. However you don't get quite as much acceleration with it.

Bottom line both the CrawlMaster and the Torque Master will work really well in the SCX10.

Unless you are doing competitions, the expert version will do just fine.

I second this. I have the Torquemaster Pro 540 35t in 2 of my scx10s, they are awesome.

I just swapped a Crawlmaster 13t (12t pinion and 56t spur) into my rig after having the Torquemaster 35t (11t pinion on 56t spur) in for just one test run. The 35t Torquemaster had loads of torque, but geared how HH suggests, it just wasn't fast enough (walking speed).

It's great for slow trailing and crawling, i just want to have a bit more top end (Personal preference) so the 13T crawlmaster with a 12t pinion on 56t spur is perfect for my liking

Not quite fair comparing a 35T TorqueMaster to a 13T CrawlMaster for speed.
The 13T CrawlMaster is about the same speed as a 27T TorqueMaster Pro.

I agree, it's not fair, i'm just speaking from my own experience. Based on the countless threads on guys LOVING the 35T Torque Master, i thought i'd like it, but it is just too slow for my tastes. I could have geared it for more speed, but based on HH's suggestions, i geared it as they suggested to lessen the risk of burning it up.

I liked the speed the truck had with the stock 27t (Not looking for more speed than stock offered)

So after talking with John, i went with a Crawlmaster 13t.

Not comparing them so much as just stating my own opinions after having run both motors.

I ran a torquemaster PRO 30t in my scx-10 for a few years, until I sold it. Still have the BR-XL and pro 30t combo waiting to go in my next scx-10. AWESOME combo on 3s lipo and still great on 2s. the pro offers a lot more torque than an expert as they are handwound, so all around it will have much better performance and much better drag break. But if money is an issue the sport and expert motors will still perform well.

But I really like the versatility of the 30t as I have speed like a 27t, yet still have torque like a 35t. Its great for running 1.9's. I've ran a 35t, a stock 27t, and a few different brushless combos in scx-10's I still come back to the 30t every time! brushless is just a little too much speed and torque, but it's fun. and I think Holmes should have some 30t's in stock.

I got my 30t torquemaster pro today and put it in my scx10 and left the 27t torque master sport in my wraith....the 30t is AWESOME!!!!!! I love the torque and wheel speed!

Glad you like it! Another thing to consider when comparing the two is the drag brake will be stronger on the torquemaster. If you run a holmes esc with the holmes hold the crawlmaster will hold fine on hills but roll pretty easily with any other esc. From my experience the torquemaster's com lasts a little longer too.
