Default How many batteries

I have an scx10 with 2.2 tires and geared down to 14t pinion. I currently have 2 3000mah Nimh batteries.

How many batteries do you guys usually take with you when you go crawling?

I am planning on going crawling to spots that are about an 1 hour away and want to make sure i have enough batteries to last me.

Should i buy 1 more nimh or 2 more nimhs? i currently only have 2.

Thanks guys

Is there a reason you want to run nimh?
Lipos are so much better.

Why nimh? Just get 2or3 lipos 2s 4-5000 and have more than a days worth of crawl time

just because i already have a charger and two nimhs. I cant afford to convert to lipos right now since i would need a new charger and more expensive batteries.

It can handle 2s lipo with no problem...myself i use onyx and turnigy...i have dual 5000mah turnigy lipos in a saddle pack configuration on the sliders of my rtr rubicon hooked up in parallel so it acts like 1 10,000mah....i get a long runtime...over 3 hours but i do more than crawl...the charger is an onyx 235...

If you can't go to hobby partz and drop $50 for a charger and a couple lipos you're in the wrong hobby. Shitty battery technology is what drove me away from rc's for several years. Plain and simple, don't be a nihmrod.

My batteries cost about 26.00 each including shipping on ebay and my charger was 89.00 at the LHS..so thats 141.00...
But...thats what i chose to buy...im sure there are cheaper alternatives but you get what you pay for

I beat the crap out of my batteries from hobbypartz and they were $9 each. My charger is a dynam dc-6 that is on hobbypartz for $29.95 yes there are more expensive options out there but until you start getting into really big power its all just money pissed down the drain.

My first lipo's were 1300 3s. They have 2200 mah 2s for $9.44. Hobbyking has them even cheaper.

how much run time can you get out of a 1300 or a 2200? I went with the 5000's for long run times between battery changes...

I get about 30 minutes out of the 1300 in my brushed crawler and 20 minutes in the scx with an rx8/3300. The 1300's fit on the front axle of the crawler perfectly and I use them on the scx occasionally. The 2200's last about 45 minutes on the scx, I don't use them on the crawler since they don't fit on the VP link/servo plate. I do have a 4000 and a couple 5000 mah 3s but those are silly big for my tastes and raise the center of gravity way too high so they only get used in my exo where they fit perfectly.

ok, My 5000's are on the sliders of my rubicon and seem to do a very good job of keeping the COG low enough for my needs..

10,000 mah on the rig.

I get bored and switch between all of my rigs too much to use that much juice in one of them in a single day. Well, except in the exo but that's another story all together.

well, I like to do long trail runs over a diverse terrain around here...so for me its a relaxing few hours away from the real world
and I will take all 3 of my rigs with me and run one after the other...the 2 wraiths only have 5000Mah lipos in them, one 2s and one 3s

I can echo the 45 minute run times with the 2200mah 3s batteries. I mount mine across the chassis in front of the skid. I have ran a 5000mah 2s in the same location and get a solid 1.5hrs run time, but it is big and heavy. I usually take 3 batteries with me and change as needed. The few minutes it takes to change a battery is well worth the weight reduction and front biased weight. I am running 35t brushed on a SCX.

I have a dual NiCad 3000 mah setup in my SCX, but purchased a LiPo charger when I got the Wraith. Because of my SCX running dual batteries, I purchased a Onyx 245 dual battery charger.

TowerHobbies.com | Duratrax Onyx 245 AC/DC Dual Charger

It can charge 2 completely different batteries at the same time. With different charge rates an everything, with a peak charge rate of 5 amps per battery. I have been very impressed with this purchase. The current $120 price tag was well worth it. The only thing it was missing was a "Storage" mode for LiPo where it charges the pack to 3.84v an a discharge mode. To get around this, I bought a balancer/discharger for my lipo batteries which ran me an additional $20.

To charge a 5000mah 2s lipo is taking me about 60 min roughly.

Hope this helps
John

I have that same charger too. Works great when I hook it up to my car. Only problem with it is that there's not much customization or options, and it only does 2S and 3S. But most people use only those anyway so it's a good price.
