| Got used SCX10, what maintenance
Hi guys, I just bought an used SCX10 Honcho, it is upgraded as follows: - True Bead Lock Wheels (internally weighted) - 4 TomaHawk RC4WD Wheels. - Aluminium Lower Links - Servo Location Kit (RC4WD) - RC4WD Metal Side Rails - Metal Steering Linkage Links. I will receive it by next week, what general maintenance is required? am planning to grease it, clean it. Is there other things I need to take care of? Thanks, |

You should really strip it down to nothing, clean, inspect, re-lube, then re-assemble. Just so you know what the condition of everything is. I found some cool goodies that the original owner didn't tell me about with a recent scx10 trade I just got.

Like said above, strip it down and check/replace all the bearings, check ring and pinions, transmission gears, re-grease and re-assemble. There's not too much to them!

if it is operable... and you want to do so immediately. sooo... at the very least... be sure to check all the external screws to be sure they are still tight. loosing a screw on something vital... can ruin your day ! But yeah... unless you know what the original owner has done as far as maintenance... prolly smart to tear it down and rebuild the whole deal. the instruction manual should offer that insight. one note... apply some blue locktite to screws that thread into metal. well if you have any of that. Another tip if doing a rebuild... replace the cheesy looking wood screws... for 3mm machined screws. They fit slightly tighter... and hold stronger. |

I've had good luck with the cheap Avid bearings. They have a nifty feature to look up bearing kits by application on their site. They are cheap enough that you may as well replace all the bearings on the truck as cheap insurance. It would also be a good idea to pick up some 5x7x.1 and 8x12x.1 and 10x12x.1 shims to take out the excessive play in the transmission top shaft, the transmission output shaft, and the axles ring and pinion. This excessive slop is created by Axials somewhat loose tolerances, and then increases very slightly after enough abuse. |

Now that you are getting a manual, it won't be hard to disassemble and check all parts for serviceable wear. I would (like been discussed earlier) replace the machined 3 mm screws in everything that has tapered screws. Most importantly ball joint screws. I took a brand new rtr scx 10 out of the box a few years ago that had a ball joint screw missing loose in the box. Disassemble and check the axles and transmission bearings. I use Mobil 1 grease ( like you would put in a grease gun). If who ever had it and was hard on it it may need some bearings. I take my trucks apart every six months. The trans bearings last, but axle bearing you are replacing approx.half of them. I run mine pretty hard. Take the shocks apart and relube them . Switch the springs to soft for the front and super soft for the rear , for the duel spring rates. Check electronics wiring for fraying and replace as needed. Use lipo battery's. When you need a servo, go overkill. Get a super high torque high dollar one when needed. When you upgrade go for higher quality. Above all have fun. Welcome to the addition!!!!

If you want to start reading the manual now you can download it at http://docs.axialracing.com/instruct...Honcho_RTR.pdf |
