Default SCX10 Rubicon Roof Paint Question

Hello. I apologize if this has been asked a lot already; wasn't having much luck with my search. I'm a novice painter, do you know how they got the sort of flat matte non-glossy appearance on this Axial SCX10 Rubicon? It appears to have been painted on the outside of the polycarbonate(?). Is that viable and if so how would you do it? Thanks. -KYLE

Yup that is what it looks like.
It works rather well, just remember the color underneath will show through when it gets scratched.

Hmm...from when I was a kid (20 years ago) I don't remember having great success painting polycarbonate bodies on the outside. I'm thinking maybe I should just paint on the inside and deal with it. Unless anyone has specific experience recommendations for doing the outside like this. Perhaps I could reach out to Axial..

You could use black bumper paint from an auto parts store. For the most part, it's semi-flat, but it's flexible. Come to think of it, you could also use rubberized undercoating.

Thanks Swedcrawler; not to be a pain but if you get a chance and are willing to share a better photo of the roof I'd really appreciate it. Its hard to really see the paint and texture from that angle. Thanks.

That look is exactly what I want. Starting to wonder if the maintenance might be more trouble than its worth though. Thanks for sharing. Nice Jeep!

It's super easy no masking, just spray the hole roof take a knife and cut along with the doors and peel of about one hour ink paint drying. 3 coats 15 min / coat then cut and peel

This is a pic I found using google of PS 23 on the outside. so it would look like this but when scratched it would give it that dark black scar look.

There may be a better gray out there, but I thought this one looked good.

Default SCX10 Rubicon Roof Paint Question

That roof looks to be sprayed with Lexan paint on the outside. You still get the adhesion like you do when sprayed on the inside of the body. If you spray Lexan paint in super light coats, on the outside, it will tend to have a satin finish.
I did the interior on my SCX10 Jeep Wrangler that way. I got the idea from a blog post on Axial's website.

What works for me is paint the outside with standard black lexan paint as a base coat. But then use any flat black on top of that. The lexan paint sticks to the lexan, and the flat black paint stick to the lexan paint. It works great.

Great tips (having one of those roofs new in bag but unused for the same questions for a while, was glad to see this thread too ) guys! I'm digging the plastidip suggestion--I'd recently been giving that stuff a lot of thought/research (for wheels and trim on out 1:1 FJ Cruiser),hadn't thought about it fo rthis application.

My question is...how the heck do we mount the roof to the body?

About the mounting question.. At first I used the stock mountings (screwed to the cage) but it's a pain in the ... To change battery out in the trail so now I use velcro.. Didn't think it would hold up but it does..
