Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build

Well after bashing this bug around a lot I've found that the magnets at the front just aren't quite as strong as they need to be. Hitting some big bumps would make the magnets pop off, they would grab back on right away but it was a bit of a pain. I found that the velcro at the back that I'd recently added stuck very well so I've taken out the front magnets and added velcro on a cross member up there as well.

So far it seems to be working very well. Hasn't come off yet no matter how hard I thrash this thing. I stuck a corresponding strip of velcro on the body as well.

Working on a new driver today. My son got a cup at a movie a while back with this head on it. Looks like Sherman's driving the bug now. Cost me six bucks to buy it off of the shrewd little businessman. It's stuck on the wild Willy body.

Stopped by the LHS the other day and picked up some wipers and new mirrors as well.

Bit of paint and he's looking better. Still need to touch up a few little bits.

One question though. Is this what Wild Willy looks like without the helmet?

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build

My lovely wife got me a GCM Racing front mount kit for Christmas. Installed it today. The quality is excellent, everything went together just fine. Because of the slope of the beetle body I had to mount the CMS on the bottom of the mount. Have to see how it all works out. Also, got a full body for the driver. Looks like I'm going to have to build an interior now.

Here's the whole shooting match. Motor and transmission are moved under the hood. Probably should have gone backwards and put the motor in the back where it belongs in a Beetle. :lmao:

I flipped the battery tray around. Now the battery is going to live in the back seat. Lots of room for an interior now.

The driver has grown a body!

Not that you can see it.

Made a little seat out of some scrap foam. Needs some more work. Might be a tad high.

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build

Finally got around to working on the Bug again. It's been a long time between posts!

I've had this Pro-Line PL-C floor pan kicking around for years and finally trimmed it to fit the Bug body and chassis with the new motor mount. I'd trimmed it before to fit a stock Dingo so they are bits missing that I would have left on otherwise. Maybe I ought to make a transmission tunnel.
http://tossedman.com/images/Bug/bug83.jpg

I painted the aluminum plate to match. It blends in pretty well. The battery will sit across where the back seat would be.
http://tossedman.com/images/Bug/bug84.jpg

Got the driver's seat stuck in with some servo tape. Can't find the darned steering wheel. It's lost somewhere in the morass of my bench. I'll find it though.
http://tossedman.com/images/Bug/bug85.jpg

I cut out the driver's window as well. Lets you see a bit more detail inside.http://tossedman.com/images/Bug/bug86.jpg

Finally glued in the dashboard. I added some ball head pins for the knobs.
http://tossedman.com/images/Bug/bug87.jpg

Still more to come.

Cheers eh,

Todd

Found the steering wheel. Wasn't on the bench after all. It was in a box, put away. What a concept.

This guys pretty short. He made need some blocks on the pedals to reach them.

Looks OK from here. Windshield could use a bit of a cleaning though.

Went to for a drive today at our local Blackfoot RC park scale trails. Haven't been in a while and the guys have done a great job in adding to the trails and obstacles. Found that I need to trim the floor plan a bit as it's interfering with the velcro body mounts and the body pops off too easily. I also trimmed the frame frame rails a quarter of an inch to make up for the new front bumper/CMS mount from GCM as it protrudes a bit at the front. I'm liking the look of the driver and interior details out in the daylight. I did paint the dash knobs though. Didn't like the look of the white so now they're khaki like everything else.

Yeah it never went away, I was just playing with it and not working on it (aside from the 6 months of winter we get up here).

Just bought a Traxxas TRX4. Man it drives nice. Going to see if I can shoehorn the beetle body onto it. It looks doable. Going to have to shorten the wheelbase and cut the frame rails. Going to try to mock it up tomorrow.

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build

Well, this thread is posted under the Axial SCX-10 section but I've just moved the whole thing over to a Traxxas TRX4 chassis.

I lowered the front body mount and added a Sintra strip with velcro to hold the front of the body down. I was surprised to find that the Axial bumper fits as well.
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-64249.jpg

I used some shorter Axial links and shortened the wheelbase. I also cut off some of the frame at the rear and added another velcro strip to hold the rear end of the body down. I'm using the same velcro placement that I had on the Axial chassis.
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-64251.jpg

It'll look something like this when it's done. Got to fine tune to body placement once the Sintra with the velcro strips dries. I glued them on with some goopy 6000 stuff. It sits a bit higher than on the Axial chassis. Not looking that different but it sure drives different.

Going steal back the wheels my son borrowed for his truck. These are them.
http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...3992-58912.jpg

Back to square one with the interior and the inner fenders though. Going to hook the lights up again as well and think about adding a winch.

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build

Finally got it out in the dirt today with the Bug sitting on it's new chassis. It is SO much more capable now. I went to the Blackfoot RC Park here in Calgary and cruised over all kinds of rocks that would throw the SCX-10 chassis for a loop. In low gear with both diffs locked it was a pleasure to drive.

http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/membe...4324-64257.jpg

My son liked it so much he wanted one for himself. He sold his SCX-10 to a buddy of his to raise some cash. His friend's dad jumped on the idea with the plan that his boy would now spend less time in front of the computer. The blue one is my son's former truck and the silver one is his new one. Mine looked just like that yesterday.

Re: Dingo to Bug - First SCX10 build

Took the Beetle over to the Blackfoot RC park here in Calgary on Thursday. A buddy was driving my TRX4 for the first time. He had just driven his SCX-10 Dingo which is pretty much stock and has a huge turning radius. He was impressed by the difference. My son was driving his stock TRX4 with the silver Defender body.
