Default DowntownScience's ever evolving SCX10

My SCX10 has changed a bit since my last thread. Wasn't sure how to change the original thread name so I'm starting a new one with a title that is sure to last the truck's lifetime!

Body:

I was ready for a Jeep and a guy I know is part of the Nor Cal Jeep Cherokee club. I liked the look of his truck and thought I'd go for it. Will have to get a picture of his truck as it did serve as motivation for this project.

Here are a few other Cherokees that served as inspiration for paint, fenders, etc.

I knew I wanted my paint to look like this when I saw it online.

I started by spraying the body Tamiya Translucent Green. It's really hard to gauge what this paint is doing and I definitely used too much! After the Translucent Green was Tamiya Fluorescent Green backed with Tamiya Silver and the last coat Tamiya Black.

The windows were also tinted using Tamiya Smoke. Rears are darker than the windshield and fronts.

My green is a bit darker than I had envisioned, but it still looks awesome in the sun!

Wheels and Tires:

A list of the tires that I've purchased (from newest to oldest) and my thoughts about them...

  • Pitbull Rock Beast (1.9) - I like that they're not too small and not too tall. I like how tacky they are and I love the tread pattern. Plenty of grip in all directions. Not as good on slick rock. First tire I'm running with a Crawler Creations foam.
  • RC4WD MT Baja Claw (1.9) - Great looking tire. Very tall. Little to no side bite. Probably shouldn't be your first choice for rock crawling. They're probably great in the dirt.
  • RC4WD Interco IROK Super Swamper (1.9) - These were great tires. Very tall, excellent tread pattern. Don't think I ever used them with the proper foams. Would like to get some CC foams for them and mount up.
  • Axial RipSaw (2.2) - These tires are absolutely huge. Great tread pattern. Got a set of them off a RTR for cheap and wanted to try them when I first got my SCX10. Son ran them for a bit and did great with them. Need a lot of foam for these babies!
  • Axial RipSaw (1.9) - I wish these tires were just slightly taller because I love the tread pattern and grip that these tires provide. I've got a set mounted right now that my son is using.
Foams, foams, foams! There isn't a tire out there that will perform the way that it should without the proper foams. The Crawler Creations foams that have the closed cell inside with a thin open cell perimeter work really well. Provide very good stability for side hilling. Just enough open cell foam softness to allow the treads to form

Front (with battery mounted):

Shocks:

I use Team Associated V2 shocks. They're nothing special, not threaded. They are very inexpensive, stroke nice, are easy to rebuild, and have many spring choices.

For around $25- you can get a set of F/R from a parted out SC10 RS or other SC10 RTR on eBay. So for 50- you've got 2 sets of shocks to play with. One around 90mm and the other around 100mm.

I use the "rear" shock assembly on all four corners, but use the "front" springs. This gives me a nice amount of play to get my droop to 40% using pre-load spacers.

One of the greatest things about these shocks is that the lower spring retainers won't fall off whether the spring has tension on it or not. Team Associated designed the slot on the lower shock collar to be smaller than the shock piston so that you have to use some force to get the piston into the collar and then it seats on the lower eyelet.

The Team Associated front springs weights are higher than the rears in their respective colors. I like a stiffer spring because I don't like the body bouncing around or rolling over too much and I'm now using a 40 wt oil (instead of 30) to slow things down a bit. Never liked how when the truck would come off of an obstacle it looked like a bobble-head doll!

I used two full can's of that Translucent Green!!

What's cool about it is the dimension/shading effect it gives in the cracks and crevices that you may have put a little too much paint in!

I really like that color you're talking about you have a pic? Remember when they started putting out cars like that 15 or so years ago.

I think it's probably the best adjustment/modification I've made to my truck so far! Made a hug difference in the way it handles the rocks.
