| Holmes hobbies torquemaster spool
Ok, expecting to catch hell for this...however, im stuck...or a moron. Had my front axle apart tonight, had the old locker in one hand and the new spool in the other. I cannot see how it 'drops' in to replace the old locker at all. What simple, obvious and completely critical detail have I missed? |

You're not trying to put the Holmes Locker in the stock diff case are you?? The spools like that just bolt directly to the ring gear like the stock plastic diff case, it replaces the stock locker and case.

I was trying to bolt it to the side of the ring gear, however - these little two pins shown here were interfering with me being able to do it.

I think I've just answered my own question. Is it possible, that the spools do not work with the stock ring gears, and that this would be a good time for me to purchase an OD front like this one? |

Yeah, the HH spool is designed for the HD gears only. The Hot Racing, Grip Fab and Locked-Up FI spools look like they will work with the stock gears and the HD. All three have pin holes that appear to be in the same location as the pins on the stock gears. Pictures 2, 3 and 4 at the link below actually show the stock gear on the Grip Fab ARB. I guess Holmes decided we didn't need the option, despite the "drop-in" fit. GripFab "V3" Locker Officially Licensed by ARB! Last edited by Eric0424; 07-30-2015 at 05:16 PM. |

I'll take the drop in fit with a grain of salt next time I pick something up for the rig.

You're welcome. Sometimes terms or phrases like "direct fit", "drop-in", etc. are not quite accurate. In this case they probably just assume most are upgrading to the HD gears anyway. Sort of like offering free shipping but with a $7 "handling charge" you don't see until you're about to finalize an order.

That's what I plan on doing when I upgrade the lockers, but I plan on keeping the old gears as back-ups if they're not wasted by the time I get my lockers.

A dremel or die grinder will take those pins off the stock gears in about 5sec flat if you want to go that way. But the HD gears are a great upgrade, definitely worth while. |

| Re: Holmes hobbies torquemaster spool I figured that might be an option, but If I'm going into the axles again...I'm doing it with HD gears in my hands |

I just replaced my stock gears with od/ud. I could see a lot of uneven tooth wear, even though I had the mesh spot on. Possibly due to 3s and Holmes hold... Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

O/D & U/D gears installed this weekend. Rear went in fine. Front O/D gears have a mild but noticeable bind both using the stock locker...and the new HH Torquemaster locker. Assembled, dissasembled and installed my front Axle 4 times to figure this out Tempted to just run it into submission. |

Try a shim.....I've noticed some poor gear mesh with the hardened gears sometimes

Ya I had to shim the input where the driveshaft bolts in. Lateral was fine, too much thrust from the pinion side. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

Shims help a lot, I hate having to break down the axle again, it only shows up when you tighten it down

its noticeable on each half turn, at the same point. no obvious deformations with the gear teeth, I'm thinking a bad mating with the locker / locker housing.... I did notice I didnt put the gasket on with either the HH locker, or the stock locker housing - and when I assembled the axles together, one side seemed a fraction shorter than the other. got some more pulling apart and reassembling to do

Put the driveshaft on and pull it away from the housing while turning. If the half turn gets smoother you put 5mm shims on the pinion shaft until there's enough 'preload' to get the mesh on. Otherwise you have to check the lateral spacing on the axles/locker. You can also make sure you aren't over tightening the axle housing. Edit: The hh spool doesn't use the locker gasket.
