Default longer lasting xr10 mod?

I have the XR 10 mod on my scx10 right now and my problem is that I wear out universals very fast. they get loose in the locker and then eventually strip Out. The last one i did i shaved down just enough to where i really had to shove it to get into the locker.

I have splined tubes and hot racing lockers running od and ud with a roc 412. Gearing is 16 87

Is there a way to modify the universals so they last longer?. Is there another brand i should try?

I had problems breaking xr universals on my SCX, so I used Vanquish Wraith VVD,s. You will need to buy an additional long side shaft and machine them both down to fit. It may be a few less degrees in steering angle but they are bullet proof.

Do they offer more steering than the vvds for the scx10? Or are they basically the same, just made for wraith chubs n knux

Yeah, the issue is likely your spool. The Hot Racing are notoriously sloppy. I'd suggest getting a Locked Up R/C FI spool, a Holmes spool, or if you have the patience to set it up a Felsenfest spool.

OD/UD is gonna be harder on the lockers and the uni's tang.

lose that if ya want a longer, more durable, user consumption.

if no... get a harder locker... ie: F1 spool

realize... if ya beat on yer rig... things will wear out.

Ok, i wasnt aware that the hotracing wasnt hardened.. or that they used a different grade steel. I was assuming the fi and hr were the same, but its a cheap price to pay for the FI spool.. instead of new unis or always rewelding and reworkng them

Yep. That is why I run stock/UD gears, little less driveline abuse and still climbs and steers well.

Like the others said its most likely the lockers because I have been using the same uni's for over a year. They have gotten sloppy but not too bad but I'm using quality spools. Also with your fast brushless system and the OD and UD gearing your putting a lot of pressure on your drive train because they are both fighting each other. I only run the OD gears up front and stock HD gears in back with my brushless wraith.

Mine were breaking at the uni, not the shaft. I us a fi spool. Nothing is going to give you more steering than the uni, but the vvds are tuffer. I am running a roc412 and od front.

In the past I heated up the cut ends to cherry red and pounded them down to flare out slightly. With a case hardening dip in sugar and quench after grinding down to fit into the locker... no issues. YMMV of course.
