Default kit vs rtr

im looking for an scx to run with my son and his scx10. we built his as a kit, but for myself, looking cheap.....or, less expensive. why is the kit that much more in the long run than an rtr?

I say kit.You get the aluminum steering/suspension links. And the aluminum shocks. Not the greatest shocks but they work to start with.Plus you get to install the electronics of your choosing. Its the better electronics packages and a better quality radio set that adds to the cost of the kit route. The RTR electronics leave a lot to be desired.Plus you paint the body your favorite color. Not white, red or baby shit green.

KIT is cheaper yes, but bare in mind you have to buy (by choice of course)
- Tx & Rx
- ESC & Motor
- Servo
- Battery (lipo) & charger

RTR may not look cheap but you could always sell those unneeded things seperately then buy other parts to your desire

I purchased an Axial Honcho RTR round 1
e components were castle compatible product.

2 years later...

still utilize the original esc...
tho' I needed add an external bec to up the BEC's voltage
and also so I could run a 3s LiPo without issue.
Upgraded the TX/RX to a Fly Sky GT3-C ( castle compatible )

The newer Axial RTR's come with a different esc (AE5)
and these are no longer castle link compatible.
But it can be manually set up to run either 2s or 3s LiPo's.

I enjoyed purchasing my RTR and being able to run the rig from day one.
Upgrades can wait until things fail... and they will.

Still silver like the RTR kit... 'cuz I like silver.
And because eventually the exterior will get painted...
and any paint scrapes/marrs will show thru silver (metal) under that.

For my second crawler choice...
I chose the ever popular Wraith in kit form.
Because I wished to add my own choices of what e components
I would like to utilize - run.

So I again purchased another FlySky TX/RX (inexpensive)
a Holmes Hobbies BR/XL WP esc.
Solar D772 servo
Castle external BEC set at 7.4v

( ^ technically I could use one TX for both.
But ya can't drive them both, at the same time, with only one controller)

The HH BR/XL looks just like my Honcho's rtr AE2 esc...
and is also castle compatible...
But it truly is a different esc internally
and it proves this in it's settings and performance capabilities.
2s - 6s capability, 6v internal BEC and castle link adjustable.

^ hands down the best brushed motor, Crawler, ESC going... IMO

I also altered my Wraith to become 1/6 scale
instead of it's original 1/10 scale designation.
Basically a longer homemade chassis I built myself.

Just changed the chassis and increased suspension wheel base
then mounted an 1/6 scale Nylint(Funrise) TJ Jeep body to the chassis.

done...

Comparison of the 1/10 Vs 1/6 scale (quad on left is 1/6 scale as well)

I personally like having both RTR and Kit options.
And so it really depends on what you have in expectation.

If yer in no hurry to roll... get a kit and do what you like.
If ya wanna run on day one... get an RTR
and fix what breaks /or upgrade as you go.

Bottom line...

it comes down to your wants/needs/funding.

Not at all. My rtr has -overall- worked flawlessly for a year now and I took it on a hardcore crawl last month - nothing broken.

In fact when I built my unimog the axial esc was my first choice and I have an axial motor in my d90.

I would say the included radio wasn't up to snuff if only because I needed another channel for the winch.

Nothing - that's not what I said.

First post I stated that the RTR is very tough and will survive a lot (and crawl ok) out of the box. This means the whole thing even electronics.

Second post I suggested that you might want to replace the radio if you want another channel for winch lights or whatever.

Most don't stay completely stock for long.Nature of the hobby. Also a huge part of this hobby by upgrading/maintaining or just plain old tinkering.

Lots of good suggestions here, I'd go Deadbolt SCX10 RTR and upgrade as it breaks or take a look at Vaterra Ascender, it comes in kit and RTR and has many included features that you must buy as upgrades for Axial.

the RTR electronics are not bad, it's been proven many times it holds what it supposed to (aside from some ESC not waterproofed - yet)

I myself swith the Tx to Sanwa MT4 just becoz I had it and it feels much better on the throttle.. although it is just a matter of taste

yes true, agree to that.. at least when we upgrade parts we know the benefit it gives to our rig

i have both the kits for my self i like building them lol and the rtr for my son just because its pull it out the box and slap a battery in and let him go so if you like building it than a kit is the way to go because you can get them both running for the same money but the electronics you choose may differ i already had the electrons for mine also

I also say a kit,
so that you and your son,
can build it together,
make it fun, and he will get into it
plus you both get familiar
with the SCX10

I got one of each

The Honcho is now a Truggy it was a RTR at first, not any more

The Toyota Truggy was one I always wanted to build

So I bought enough parts online and on here to build it
