Default Chubs and knuckles

In the market for new aluminum chubs and knuckles, as I've already broken the stock knuckle on the deadbolt the first time out running it.

My question is... Do all the high clearance knuckles have a tighter turn radius, or is it the zero Ackerman (may be one in the same?). Would rather replace once and forget about it. I know everyone has a hard on for vanquish, and probably for good reason.

I run basic axial aluminum knuckles and they work for me. what gave me alot more radius was running cvds and ditching the stock dog bone axle setup... much smoother turns at full lock also.

It's a slippery slope upgrading a stock SCX's steering angle. The stock type "high clearance" knuckles only gain you a couple degrees until the dogbones are maxed out. The Axial CVD's will allow more angle, but are considered weaker than the stock dogbones. If your patient with a tapered carbide bit you can clearance about .7mm off of the outer dogbone "cup" to gain about 7 degrees over stock. You just have to make sure you don't remove too much and allow the inner drive pin to fall out of the cup's slot at full steeing angle.

If you really only want to spend the money once then look in to the "XR" mod. It requires a little bit of DIY clearancing of the stock axle housing (like ten minutes with a dremel and round file), and the purchase of XR U-jointed shafts ($35), XR/Wraith knuckles and C-hubs ($14 for plastic, $50-100 for Al), and beef tubes ($28 and on up). This will get you much sharper steering angle with a significant increase in axle strength. It will also allow you to clock the driveshaft up a bit without sacrificing caster angle. You will have to make a tie rod and drag link. Possibly make steering arms for the knuckles depending on the desired clocking angle and mechanical leverage ratio compared to the length of the servo horn.

It sounds like a PIA, but it's well worth the effort IMO.

If I was in the market I would pick up Locked Up Rc's new Knuckles,Chubs, and brass bushings. LURC Makes killer stuff and their new steering upgrades look amazing. I do love vanquish but I would advise to avoid their offerings unless you plan on running a wide track width/ offset wheel. SSD Pro versions are another great option. Good luck with your purchase

My vote is for the narrow xr mod using vanquish scale clamping wraith hubs then your choice of knuckles. I've also been using vanquish brass bushings with great results so far. The clamping hubs make the xr mod so much easier to do since you do not have to drill holes in your axle. There's a bunch of great vendors on this forum to buy the beef tubes from. As for the axle shafts just go at them with a flat file taking care to keep it square. Having a locker handy to check fitment helps in the process. This will get you roughly 50* of steering angle and has been holding up to the abuse I put my rigs through.

^Yep XR10 universals are stronger than Axial scx10 cvds.

I'm kinda leaning towards the narrow xr mod, because I do enjoy a little hands on/modding type stuff. However, by the time I purchase all this, how close would I be to just buying the Currie axle or something similar?

You'd be around one front housing but a housing wont help your steering.

So the steering on the currie would basically be the same as the stock axle?

Yes just a different housing.

How come no one sells xr-10 shafts already modded?!? Not everyone has the skill, or the room and tools to do extra mods and what not. I know I would buy a set

Alright, I gotcha. The main thing I was looking for off the bat is durability. Looks like if I do the xr mod, that should cover it and at least the axles will still be the same instead of one Currie and one stock!

Couldn't run one stock and one currie anyways. Ring gears are on the opposite side of the axle. they'd spin towards or away from each other. lol

The set I did a few nights ago were made with a flat file and a deemed to cut them down a little bit. No precise measuring or special tools involved as you file the round portion of the shaft just make sure the shiny part looks square. If one end gets wider than the other then take the skinnier side down to match until you meet up to the existing flat. Check the engagement in the locker you'll be using and keep it tight. Just go slow when you get close.

Actually TJ RC Products on facebook does. He will do xr10 VVDs too if wanted.

Found the parts I believe I'm looking for, maybe see what I'm missing...

Axial front universal XR10s
Vanquish wraith scale chubs
Vanquish wraith scale knuckles
scx10 standard beef tubes (not the longer tubes)

Trying to keep the axle and all stock width
Do I need new Vanquish bushings or anything else to make this work?
I know I'll need the different steering arm, is there one pre-made that works? Wouldn't mind trying to make my own, but not sure how well I can do if it needs the bends in it.

Thanks again for all the help!

Does beef tubes make splined standard width tubes? I would get the vanquish bushings. RC4x4 Performance stainless on facebook offers steerling links for narrow xr mod.

Is there an advantage with having them splined?

Stronger. My friend did it without the splined tubes and he eventually had to get splined ones.
