Define budget? I consider anything under $100 to be budget friendly. Check out Team Brood.

I just got my poison spyder so its currently stock but having read the first post felt I should do something to prevent problems, I'm not doing anything crazy with it mainly using it as an fpv & video platform but need to run slow and smooth, stock its very "jumpy" so was thinking of:

A - Swap the 20T drive pinion out for a 14T which will lower the gear ratio to 5.71:1

B: Tweak the ESC's throttle curve for more progressive low end power

C: Swap out the stock motor for either a 35T or 27T

Later when I'm more confident at tinkering swap out the stock 48p gears for 32p.

Its odd but I used to be a motor mechanic and have stripped & rebuilt many engines and gearboxes in my time but I feel quite nervous about playing with this.

Everything you mentioned will make the startup smoother, as will practice. Personally, I'd tweak the ESC first, it's free (if you already have the CastleLink) and easy to undo. Next would be the smaller pinion and last a new motor. If you're going to keep it slow & smooth there's really no need to 'upgrade' to 32p gears, 48p will work just fine as long as the mesh is proper.

Thanks for your reply Mike, went ahead and grabbed the castle usb lead & the 14T pinion, will let you know how it goes.

I'm stuck between a Holmes Hobbies TorqueMaster Pro 540 35t or the CrawlMaster Pro 540 16t. I am going to pair either one I buy with the Torquemaster BR-XL (waterproof). I would like to get around the same speed as the stock motor. Also I was wondering what else I would need to support this. For example new gearing. I am new to modifying RC so all help is appreciated.

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

Get the 35t and you can run 2s for near stock speed and 3s for a little more speed. The 16t would be faster than the stock brushed motor.

I just bought a Axial Wraith Spawn and I will only use it form crawling. What would be the most cost effected way to increase the low end speed performance? My plan is to add a 9T pinion and use the stock motor. Or would it be better to buy the Axial 27T motor and use the stock 12T pinion?

What do you guys think?

I currently run the same motor on my wraith! I have the 2700kv

If I had to buy it again I would most probably go for the 3300 though... following Holmes motto "volts up, gear down "

RRP spur is great but make sure u pair it with RRP steel pinion!

Long time reader first time posting.

I got a new rtr wrath spawn a few months ago and have done some major over-hauling on it. I would say I crawl 80% of the time and trail it the rest. I've been playing with gears and think I've found my sweet spot with 9/56 at 32p. The problem now is finding the right way and motor to handle all that low end.

I've gone through all this forum and haven't seen too many wanting to run how I want to set mine up. Would the HH 16t crawlmaster with the HH BRXL be a good choice or should I look at something like the MMX?

Answering this one myself :)

I only use my Spawn for crawling and for crawling this is a great setup:

- Axial 35T
- 9/56 gearing
- 3S lipo

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

Hey guys looking for some help choosing a new esc/motor. I've read through this and other threads so I have narrowed down to a few choices but for the final selection I just keep second guessing myself. Right now I'm running Axial AE5 with a 35T Holmes TrailMaster Sport 56/11 Gearing on 3s Lipo. I'm not unhappy with this setup but still I would like a little motor power and tunability from esc. I can't decide if I stay brushed or change to brushless. So here's what Im looking at...

1. (The easy answer) - Upgrading esc to HH TorqueMaster BR-XL and choose either 35t TorqueMaster Pro or 16t CrawlMaster Pro

2. (What I really want to do) - Go brushless... HH TrailMaster BLE with maybe a TrailMaster 2700kv or possibly Puller Pro 2200kv.

I really like the advantages and lower maintenance of brushless but here's my concerns with #2 above.
- My Wraith has 4WS. I have heard from some that brushless is just too powerful and can hinder the advantage of 4WS
- Battery life. I like getting almost 2 hrs of run time on my current setup. How much run time would I be losing with a 2700 or 2200kv brushless
- Top speed. Having wheel speed to power through is great but I don't want to end up with a rock racer.
- I run 3s. Most brushless wraith ppl seem to run 2s with 3X00kv and those seem about as extreme as I would want in my wraith. Running those systems on 3s would definitely be too much. (not looking to get new 2s batteries)

Can anybody compare speed of stock wraith to a 2200 or 2700kv brushless motor running from 3s lipo? How's your run time?
Anybody running 3s brushless on a wraith with 4WS?

I've been trying to make a decision for months now... I need help deciding so I can order something as soon as I get my tax return
Thanks

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

2s on 3300kV is about 26-27,000 RPMs.

27,000/12v=2250kV and more torque.

I'd say go for around 2000kV on 3s and you'd like it. But, I have one I strictly crawl with on 2300kV and 2s.

Just picked up a used Wraith slider.

I happen to have a Holmes BLE and a Tekin redline17.5 sensored....

Will this work on 3s I'm assuming stock trans gears, I run the HD bevel gears stock front UD rear.

It will work...i ran a mmp and the gen 1 tekin redline 17.5 on 3s power in my 1.9 wraith without issue, i did end up dropping the pinion down a couple teeth in the long run

Does anyone know which Traxxas slipper rebuild kit, should I run on my SuperShafty top shaft with 56T Gen2 metal spur? Please let me know the part numbers. Thank you

Two words to remember....
Puller Pro.
I loved my Tekin 17.5, but this motor running through the Holmes BLE is a Monster!
Simply put, keep the roc412 at home when this motor is out. Fits perfectly no trimming, running through a bombproof trans with the RR slipper and 32p
The Super Shafty beefy top shaft came complete with nut and spring and the RR slash 2wd gen 3 slid on

I'm curious what your thoughts are about gearing in my wraith
hobbywing 1080
power hobby 35t
ebay special axles
2.2 deep woods
currently I'm running 32p 58t spur gear and a 16t 32p pinion which puts my ratio at 3.6....seems to be getting awfully warm.....I mostly do trails and crawling...going to a 14t 32p puts me at 4.2 and a 15t puts me at 3.8.....what do you think?

p.s. running 2s lipos

I would drop to a 11t pinion to get the ratio higher which will help keep temps down, also going up to a 3s lipo will help as well. You need to keep the ratio between 5 and 6:1 for the wraith motor to be happy

Some prefer the roc in a bit lower KV 3300, others like the Puller Pro in 2700kv. I've geared my 3500 at 10/56 and love it. Great wheelspeed , but can just creep at will.
The new roc is a 550 can, and that is fat..... may need some minor trimming
The Tekin I referred to is a two pole motor, not a torque monster

CRAP! I am holding up on what I buy, I do not know what the KV ratings mean or the two polo vs ??? I want to get me a bad ass motor but don't want to drop coin and find out I cannot crawl when I want but I want high end speed when I want it. I currently have Holmes Hobbies 35T motor and the high end speed is not desirable to me. I need a "caddie" for my build

Lower Kv is lower speed, running the same battery.
2 pole vs 4pole is speed vs torque. For crawling on 3s a 4 pole 2700 to 3500 is perfect. Drop Holmes a pm ant they will recommend the proper KV .
My 3500 is geared way down, as it is faster than I need, might be what you want

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

I didn't see if it were posted anywhere so I'll ask.

Option 1
Will a 32p 64t spur fit using a 10t pinion? I'm planning on running a motor with a 5mm output shaft. So a 10t pinion is as low as they go.

Option 2
Is a steel HR spur I have that's a 61t. I'm pretty sure it'll fit as it fit my Bomber tranny and there were several here using a 60t. But I'll need to drill the slipper plates to bolt it on.

Option 2 is viable and I can make it work right now. Option 1 would get the gearing real low if it'll fit. I have a sensorless 3660 in 2600kV on order and I'd need to order the 10t 5mm pinion. $20 for the can I figured I'd give it a whirl. My other Wraith is doing great with a HW1080 and Traxxas 550. So I thought I'd experiment some with my other one.

Why do you want a spur that big? Just select a spur/pinion combo that gets you in the range of that 5.1 up to 6.1 ratio.

I run 32P 57 spur (metal) and 10 tooth pinion. 5.7:1 ratio. (3s LiPo)

Re: Choosing a motor and ESC for your Wraith - Gearing Added!

The 32p 64tooth Yeti spur will fit. I have it and a 12tooth pinion with a 5mm shaft long can motor. It was a tight fit and I ended up having to trim my gear cover a little bit at the hump over the output shaft.
