Default to shim or not to shim

I need to replace diff gears in my wraith due to wear abd was told that I should shim the gears when I put them in. I was wondering if this necessary and how many do this.

i guess it depends how sloppy the pinion gear is with the driveshaft installed.

I have been building 1-1 differentials for 14 years now and you need some back lash 1 to 1 is generally 6-10 thousandths if that gives you any idea just dont build it to tight it will cause your gears to wine and wear.

Thats what I was thinking. I was afraid of getting it to tight and basically cause binding or excess resistance.

X2. I've never had to space scx10 axles cause the fit was good. We will see when my axles get here.

On my 1:1 Jeep I shimmed them as you should. But on my RC's I have never had had to shim an axle gear set.

I always shim RC diffs and trannies, SCX Honcho and AX-10 were pretty loose and needed lots of shimming especially in the diffs. Wraith was much better and needed almost zero shimming. A little loose is better than too tight, but most are way too loose without any shims.

Could you give us some description of too sloppy?
Too tight?
Just right?
I know we are talking about a feel / experience thing but I wonder if there are some indicators a less experienced person could use.
I have been running the stock ring & pinions on my Wraith with the dog bone axles. I am upgrading to lockers, universals, AL bearing caps, Brz bushings on pinion shafts & HD ring & pinions so if I need to shim I would like to take care of that when I am doing all the others.

After installing hd gears and vp everything i used these TowerHobbies.com | Team Durango Shim 5x8x.5mm (10) on the exterior of the pinion shaft. I tried it on the inside but it made the gears too tight. Theres prolly a 1mm gap between my mips and the pinion bearing, by putting 2 shims there it stops the pinion from moving in!
