| Burning up motors
I had a stock 20t motor in my wraith that burnt up a few weeks ago. Then borrowed a buddys 50t motor just to try it out. Ran it for about 20 minutes then burnt it up to. The clutch doesnt seem to have any drag on it and the rear axle spins pretty freely. The front is not as free as the rear but figured that had something to do with the knuckles and axle shafts. Gonna pull it apart and look at the r&p to see if its still in good shape. What other problems should look for? Could my ESC be causing it? Im still trying to figure out all this electronic stuff out so be easy on me |

Check for bad bearings. Also if you have VP steering links with stock wheels, the ends hit the inside of the rims. Also make sure your end points are set right. Could cause some binding in the front end. Check you spur/pinion mesh too.

Check your gearing. That will kill a motor fast.

Everybody I run with had issues with burning up motors till they finally listened and changed the gearing. We all run 48p 87t spurs and 15t pinions now and the motors have been fine. Just do like JRH says volt up gear down. |

I have Robby Gordon's wheels so I know I'm good there. I'm pretty sure it's all stock gearing and I'm using it for a crawler and not so much the speed side of it. So I basically just need to gear everything down? |

| Re: Burning up motors Another low cost option would be the Holmes Hobbies TrailMaster Sport and use gearing in the 87/14 to 87/16 range. Holmes Hobbies LLC You can run it until you have the gearing down and then upgrade to TorqueMaster Expert or TrailMaster Pro. |

I run a tekin 35t with 15 pinion and 90 spur. It's what I found works best for me. You just have to read up and decide for yourself. Gears are relatively cheap.

Thanks for the help guys. I've been trying to read up on it. I think I'm just gonna buy a bunch of different gear sets and see which one I like best.

Just check the temp after running it for ten minutes at the hardest you will norm run it. Warm to the touch is ok, if you can't hold your finger on the motor for more than ten seconds then gear lower. On my brushless motor, I can run for 30 min and it's usually around 100 degrees unless I'm just beating on it then it will get a little hotter but way less than the 150 or so max degrees!

Buy a temp gun and check your temps at 5 and 10 mins. It's the best way to set up a gear ratio. Write down the info (gears and temps) so you can have a guide for future reference. |

I would start with the Spur Gear and Pinion first. I run an 87T Spur and 14T Pinion try that first.
