| Cooling Fan
Has anybody attached a cooling fan close to the esc to keep it cool? I installed Da Box from The CrawlSpace and my esc gets a little warm. It thermaled a couple of times and I think I just want to attach a fan to the underside of my hood to push or pull air through the electronics. |

Does it get hot or just warm? If its just warm I wouldn't really worry too much

The ESC gets hot enough to thermal out and shut off all functions until it cools enough to run again. So yes I need a fan.

Novak makes nice little fans. They plug into the receiver and use 5V. I have a pair on my Kyosho Blizzard to keep the dual Titan 380's cooler. Ebay is where I found them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Novak-Co...item5ae6457c25 Last edited by ZippoMan; 04-10-2013 at 06:09 PM. |

I'd get a more appropriate ESC for the job may also look into bad solder joints. Make sure cables aren't getting hot to. If so there is resistance there that's making the ESC work harder.

The ESC is completely enclosed and not able to get any fresh air to allow it to cool. All of the electronics are close together and they need some air movement over them thats all. No air movement equals hot ESC | |

All of my electronics are in balloons and in boxes for water adventures with no heat issues. Whats your gearing/motor breakdown?

FXR just looks smallish for a Wraith, and does not have a heatsink.... I run a mmp and pro4 and have 0 temp issues. Granted, the mmp has a heatsink and a fan. FXR is a dang good comp crawler esc, not sure about a 7+ lb Wraith.

Well not sure if FXR is too small....It is built small for a reason. Tekin stuff is all pretty small. My Tekin RS is about that size too. A fan should help you if you don't get too close to water or you have that FXR waterproofed already. I dunked my Tekin RS in CorrosionX for its waterproofing. I have lots of air flow around mine because I don't have it in a box.

Fxr does look tiny is it like 60amps. . I run esc's inside plane fuselages but I 15-20 amps higher the the motor is speced at. Isn't the fxr at the bottom of the tekin barrel? Also in the photo I see lots of the bullet connector. Are those connectors tight? Last edited by evan03; 04-10-2013 at 07:40 PM. |

My gearing as of now is 87 T Spur and a 14 T Pinion. My Wraith has got to be 9+ Lbs i am guessing. Although I might also benefit from a 45-55 Turn motor. I do have on my short list new ring and pinion gears as well. The solder posts on the FX-R act as heat sinks....not exactly efficient but I dont design electronics so what do I know... My plan is to stop by the LHS tomorrow and pick up a small fan and mount it to the underside of the hood so its right over the top of the FX-R. I will have a piece of stainless screen over the top of the fan as not to suck anything into the fan itself. So it will either pull hot air out or blow air onto the ESC, we will see. And yes the Bullets are tight...trust me.. |

Make sure the expose bullets aren't touching anything. I'm sure the fan will help. I'd be curious to know how hot the fxr is when it thermals. Do you have a temp gun. I invested in recent tdmo gun awhile back and have found tons if uses for it rang ring from electronics to bearings and on the kenwort dump truck. |

The exposed parts are offset as not to touch anything metal. I have a temp gun at work so we will see what I can pull off. |

I run fans on all of my esc's...I like to over drive the motors, so i actually try to run heat sinks and fans on those too. Integy makes an awsome alum., and fan combo motor sink. FX-r's I sho goo the fans to the side/top of the mount, so air flows right onto the posts/heat sinks.....hope this helps. *****Hint***** I use the power out from the esc to the rx, solder them to the fan/fans, works perfect! Must be using a BEC through the rx to configure this way...... |

So running a gear not appropriate for the motor which causes the ESC and possibly the motor to heat.

I would contact tekin personally and ask what the hell is goin on. I mean you bought the kit which is supposed to be made for each other and its not like your really bashing on the rig to even have issues with your gearing And etc.
