Default New Wraith owner with question.

So I've been lurking for a while a bought a Wraith a few weeks ago. I've done some upgrades such as Vanquish links and steering pieces, Vanquish Stage 1 kit, Method wheels with BFG R35s, Castle BEC and 32 pitch gears with a 56/14 spur and pinion. I'm also running Venom 25c 5000 2s lipos. I had the stock 20T motor in it and smoked it with maybe a pack and a half on it. I bought a Axial 27T when I bought the truck for a backup and put it in. My question is after running it for a lithe while, mainly some high speed runs to see the difference between the two motors and some crawling the motor is very hot to the touch....is that normal or have I got something else going on?

Sorry for the noob question but my background has been in nitro and 5th scale gas so electric is a little new to me.

I would drop the pinion to an 11 or 12. Yes you will looae sime top speed, but you will have better off the line acceleration.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the addiction!!!!!

I think you have the gears meshed too tight. If you're running stock motor and ESC, no need for 32pitch, but since you got it, just make sure you have plenty of wiggle between the gears. Google gear mesh and hopefully you'll find someone that will show you the correct spaceing.

I'm a big fan of researching things so I did find a vid on gear mesh and I believe the new motor I put in is properly meshed, seems to be plenty of wiggle to me.

I am fixing to pull the trigger on a Holmes 27t TorqueMaster Pro though. I'd like to go brushless but I'm clueless when it comes to the setup of those and thought it may be best to gain more experience/knowledge before going that route.

Brushless is easy. You've already got the right pinion and spur set up for a Tekin Pro 4 motor with Castle Mamba Max Pro. That's what I run and I love it. On 2s it's awesome. I have a couple more upgrades to do in preparation for 3s. Main thing is to beef up your trans with steel gears, MIP drive shafts, good lockers and HD axle gears. Not exactly cheap, but with the money in the long run. You'll enjoy your Wraith on a while new level.

i run a tekin 17.5 on 3s with 60t spur and 15 t pinion it has good speed and great low end tq. cold to the touch after 2 hours of run time on a 5000mah lipo. Sounds like you have a great start to wraith upgrades welcome to the addiction.

Might be worth checking that nothing is binding, on the off chance you have a sticky bearing causing a lot of drag. I fou done of my rear axle bearings causing my motor to get pretty hot.

I did use RC Sparks marine grease method for making things water proof so that may be a possibility.

Yes, too much grease will also cause binding. I agree with most guys as it seems to be a binding issue.

I've seen that the Tekin Roc 412 seems to be the current popular choice, is it a direct bolt in or are modifications needed to install it?

Direct bolt in. Just make certain you have the drive line beef to run it.

FYI there was an ad in the FS section for an MOM, Tekin Pro 4, and CCBEC for $175 if you're interested.

Roc412 is a torque monster. I love mine.
Cant push up the timing like you can a redline series. But the increase in torque more than makes up for it.

The 56T spur gear I have is plastic. Will the Gen 3 Robinson Racing spur bolt up directly to the stock transmission using the stock hardware or do I need to buy something else. I've looked for just a 32p 56t spur and that's the only thing I've seen.

I run Traxxas spurs and they work fine. And they're cheap, usually $4-$5.

Just an update, I cleaned out the axels, etc. from where I had applied marine grease and then replaced all my bearings with Fast Eddy bearings and problem solved. Appreciate the help.
