Question keep blowing out ring & pinion in the rear

Ok,so after running at Goat Hill I blew out my rear ring & pinion. I replaced the gear set after driving around I stabbed the throttle and noticed it started clicking again. I am running a 13.5 brushless viper w/ Tekin RS esc. Been running like this for 6 months or so. Everything looks to be in order,no stripped screw holes or beat up plastic.. it is still all stock besides the beef tubes. Is it time for some axle housing upgrades? What would you recommend?

I shimmed my pinion by putting washers where the drive shaft connects to the pinion. I have only had one ring and pinion failure(actually a bearing failure) since and I run a 3300 pro4. I know there was a discussion about changing to oil lite bushings to help prevent this same problem. You might can do a search in this forum and find it.

Check out the first page of my build thread.

U4RC 2.2 Comp Racer "Sucker Punch"

Some fellas offered up some real good advice on shimming the gears in the axles.

I would double check the bearings. I was having the same trouble with my gears. The issue was always a bad pinion bearing. Recently swapped to the dlux housings with the bigger bearing mod, and so far so good.

Was reading where Harley said to ditch the bearings all together and use bushings. I am going to tear it down this weekend and see what's going on.

I tried the traxxass bushings before buying the dlux housings. I ran the bushings one time during a scale gtg. honestly they had as much slop at the end of the day as they did with a bad bearing. Ruined a set of hd gears that day, and ordered a pair of dlux housings that night. You may get better results with the bushings than I did though.

Same here. You need bearings to take up the thrust load created by going forward to reverse. If a bushing spins, and its likely, they will melt the plastic housing. Then you loose the gears.

Helical cut gears make the thrust issue worse, but the under drive set has the best mesh, and it is helical cut.

Well after very meticulously shimming up the rear gear and installing a new set HD gears AX30395, I was testing it out and it drove nice and smooth..... until I rolled into it a little harder it was sounding great but right at the top of the throttle it started clicking again. I brought it in, and the gears still feel tight in the mesh so I can only think, is it flex from the bearing carriers?? It is still bone stock PS wraith axles with a 13.5 brushless. I need to figure this out at $26 a set of gears, its getting irritating.

Ok I have tore it back down and can find zero wrong. I mean nothing explains why I and annihilated 3 sets of gears 1 right after another. Now I am on to just replacing the whole housing and building it a little beefy before I install it. I am totally perplexed since the stock gear set lasted well over a year and now I cant drive the time it takes to get a smoke in. This is weird and costlty

If this is the same housing in all three instances, I would change it for sure. If it is worn and the bearings can move around AT ALL you will never get a constant mesh.

Running OD gears in both axles or OD/UD combo, could also contribute to the problem when not crawling slow.

I am running stock 38/13 gearing. I am almost certain it is a flexing issue cause it is ok until you put the juice to it. It is being tore done now.

I would certainly agree with that possibility. It's why I broke down and spent the money on the Vanquish housing. Never a problem since then. In fact they have been together for 7 months now. 7 U4RC races, KOH G6, Axialfest, and hours of trails. I have not even felt the need to open the axles and check.

Also, the UD gear sets offer the best mesh, something else to consider.

Well After looking and looking again it turned to be a Axial iron cross locker that was broke giving me hell. Replaced the locker and cup, everything seems to be great now.

I've see how U drive !!
your best bet - HD F1 lockers - HD gears & deluxe axle housings,
then no more problems - ever !

Well I got a F. I. Locker for the rear and next week I'll try a hot racing in the front. Unless I am wowed by the grip fab gear.
