Default First Motor Replacement (Newb Warning)

I fairly new to the hobby and bought a Wraith Spawn last week. After an hour of crawling on a 2s that died, I threw in a 3s and smoked the motor. I'd like to get another without changing out everything (esc, gears, etc) to get me backup and running.
My question is there a motor upgrade the will be compatible with the stock setup but won't break my bank. I'd like to keep it under $50. I plan to upgrade the rest, but not immediately.
I read Harley's post on the motor and esc. I didn't read all 96 pages, and didn't find my exact answer since the Spawn is different.
Thanks!

You at least need to get a lower tooth pinion to use brushed motors without constant replacement. Within your budget you are looking at sealed can or machine wound rebuildable motors. There would be enough money left over for a pinion.

The most popular lower cost motors we sell for the wraith are the following:

#1 CrawlMaster Sport 13t
#2 TorqueMaster Sport 27t
#3 TorqueMaster Sport 35t

Thanks a million!
What pinion is best and do you sell those as well?

15t with the stock spur, I don't think we have pinions right now. Always been tough to stock them, but we should start again.

Can you briefly explain the 27t vs 35t or point me to an "Idiots Guide....".
I'm on the drop down menu at your site.

If you want a great motor then Homes is the way to go. I have one in my SCX-10 and love it. More torque and speed than I got from similar spec motors from other brands.

If you want a cheap disposable motor to make due until you can do a brushless upgrade then get a traxxas 21T titan.
MAKE SURE IT IS 21 Turn, not the 12 turn from the slash!!

Generally higher turns = more torque and less speed. I have the 35t in my trail truck SCX-10. it crawls great but a bit slow for a wraith.

I say generally because you also have to look at how the motor is built. The holmes crawlmaster 13t is a higher torque design so you can have less turns and still get torque.

Big question is how do you use it? rocks, trails, or blasting at full throttle? Rocks/crawling is the hardest type of use for a motor. You really need to go high turn or gear way down to keep the motor cool.

Excellent info for the Newb!
It's mainly trail and rock.

A cheaper option is 35t integy motor for 30 bucks, and since the spawns come 4.6:1 gearing, get a 10t pinion (5 bucks) which will make it 5.6:1 and run 3s, you should be happy with that setup for time being. Or try 11t pinion which is 5:1 gearing.

Make sure you get 32 pitch pinion.
