| 45cc gasser for $175
P47Tbolt showed me this engine a week or so ago. It's a FTL45 airplane engine. The $175 price tag was nice so I decided to order one. Spent ~$40 to get it shipped. It left Hong Kong on the 5th and arrived at my door a few minutes ago. Unpacked it and I'm amazed. The lower crankcase is a two piece CNC unit! A few shots I snapped All of the engines are ran at the factory prior to shipping so this should fire right up once I get a prop on it (ordering a 20x10 carbon fiber Mejzlik prop). Can't wait to get this thing running. Part of me said to stay away from it but then I got to thinkin' that most of our hobby items are made overseas anyway. The early batches of these had missing carb inlets and a couple showed up to guys with cracked carb adapters (item between engine case and carb body). I also read a couple of reports of the propeller drive hub galling against the engine case (tolorances too tight there). My engine has about 3mm between the engine case and prop hub so it should be good to go. It has lockwashers on the engine bolts, but I'm going to remove all the screws/bolts for the engine and apply loctite before I go trying to run it. My engine is going on this. I've had this thing here for about two years and never got it up and running. Soon enough. Last edited by JasonInAugusta; 02-07-2008 at 01:35 PM. | |

P47Tbolt is also putting one on his Patty. So we'll have two 78-inchers on this engine locally. Oh, and from what I hear it uses mufflers for the Zenoah 45 which means an inverted wrap-around from Slimline (with smoke inlet, of course) is the way to go. I'll have to do some research on the exhaust to be sure before I bother ordering anything for it. Last edited by JasonInAugusta; 02-07-2008 at 01:52 PM. |

Just ordered the prop from Desert Aircraft. Was told that ground shipping should take four days, it's going out tomorrow...and that it'll be here next Thursday. Roy has a Zenoah 45 on his Patty right now, so we'll try his exhaust on the FTL to see if it'll swap. |

Stang, I just got back from Roy's house. Any exhauast for a Zenoah G45 exhaust is a direct fit. |

Roy's engine showed up today. Smelled of gas so we know it has been ran at the factory. Here's what we found... The three holes that clamp the hub washer are all drilled at an angle and aren't 120 degrees from one another on center. The washer fits one way. We'll end up putting his hub adapter and washer in the rotary table and making some evenly spaced holes that are 120 degrees apart so he doesn't have to guess if it'll go on right. The space between the hub adapter and engine case is less than on mine (See picture of mine). Not sure why yet, but I'm sure we'll end up turning the hub adapter down in the lathe to fix the problem. Then there's the carb adapter. Mine is machined from white plastic...appears to be Acetal (delrin). Roy's is a cast carbon composite material...and is cracked at one of the two mounting holes. Mine is pictured below. The odd thing is that my engine has serial number 492. I ordered prior to Roy and he ended up with 600-something but mine seems to have a better quality carb adapter. Roy's must've been made on a Friday afternoon or Monday morning. Last edited by JasonInAugusta; 02-08-2008 at 08:35 PM. |

I think jason needs to quit f***n' around with the 23cc wacker motor in his 5b and get one of these. I'm sure he and Aaron could figure out how to shoehorn it in there |

Roy fired his up today. Had to mess with needle settings (to be expected), but he got it running and ran it for 45 minutes with a 20 x 10. |

Here is pics of my engine with the concerns. First pic is the misdrilled smaller prop bolts, just a wee bit crooked. second pic is of how close the prop adapter is to the engine. third pic is the crack in the carb adapter. fourth pic is of the engine running. Despite these concerns the engine ran great once I got the mixtures retuned.Jason and I will be drilling three more "straight" holes in the prop adapter. After I removed the prop adapters, I found that I could shave down the front of the engine for more clearance. After running the engine,I found no sign of the prop adapter rubbing on the engine, but I will shave it down to be on the safe side. Engine ran for 45 minutes on the engine stand with no problems.I could disconnect ignition battery to shut it down, then it would restart in 1 prop flip. Last edited by P47TBolt; 02-09-2008 at 09:37 PM. |

Should have mine mounted up tonight. Talked to Roy, said he's ran his again, has about another 45 minutes on it. Fires up great. Once primed just turn the ignition on and flip the prop. |

| Leather gloves work well. I carry a welding glove. Really...a chicken stick with this thing...won't work so well. Small nitros, yeah I can get away with a stick. Flipping by hand is the way to go with a gasser. Got it mounted. Prop is due in sometime this week. I'm getting anxious. I've had this plane sitting for the better part of two years and hadn't bothered to build it. That crap happens when you're busy. |
