Default Whats The Best Free Anti Virus Software These Days?

I searched previous threads and they are from 2006.
Got some nasty virus from my so far trust worthy Easynews account that I pay for monthly as I tried to download some free letter font samples ...

I have just been scanning with AVG free and seems OK but I was wondering if there are any better options???

Anyone ever had this?

VIRUS ALERT! is written in in task bar and when I open start menu C-Drive/ D-Drive (I have two) and all the programs menu has disappeared.

Apple Mac!

I was very skeptical about Mac but I drove the neighbors and WOW! I don't even worry about attacks on my computer now... when my laptop dies I will be getting a Mac book!! I had several serious virus attacks with my old pc and laptop. My laptop was out of commission for months!!! And I had 2 different free anti virus/ spyware programs... Nothing is 100% on a PC.

Free Anti-Virus...thats something you should definately NOT skimp on. Not unless you are a computer guru, but then in that case you already paid for one. Plus you need more than an anti-virus, its rather obvious.

What you are noticing: VIRUS ALERT! is written in in task bar and when I open start menu C-Drive/ D-Drive (I have two) and all the programs menu has disappeared.

That is spyware or possibly a deep rooting virus. You might want to try reading here, similar problems mentioned: http://www.securitystronghold.com/gates/fatoos-c.html

There are very good free anti-virus programs out there. I have numerous ones in my arsenal to clean nasty computers that I am working on. Some for normal stuff I run across and others that target particular problems. And beleive me, I have seen some bad ones.

I have been running free software on my personal computers for over 5 years now with no problems whatsoever and I am not necessarily picky about what sites I visit.

Well I did a full scan with AVG and it shows that there are no more threats left :-( somehow I'm not prepared to trust that answer ,so I uninstalled AVG and tried the Avast trial and it also shows clean after deleting a few threats...

Unfortunately the VIRUS ALERT! is still in the task bar and no sight of the programs or access to my hard drives, this sucker i nasty !!!
