Think the most retarded thing I ever did involved a pneumatic staple gun. Was putting up some drywall in the garage and trying to be fast at it. Someone asked me a question and instead of stopping and answering, I looked over my shoulder (still stapeling) and put one through the back of my hand. Didn't hurt much, but it did go through some carteladge. Thankfully I had the presence of mind to not try to pull my hand away. Grabbed a set of needle nose, dug into my hand a bit, pulled out the staple in one yank. 4 drops of CA and I went back to work. Hand felt weird for a few days...

Dude that sucks. I've been out of the bike biz for about eight years now, but I spent the better part of 15 years total as a mechanic. Ending with a couple seasons working entirely on pro road, mountain and downhiller's bikes for Park, Marin, and Marzocchi. I don't miss those little mishaps that get fingers into spinning machinery. The worse I can recall was spinning a freewheel on a high-end BMX bike on which I was installing new Redline cranks and hadn't yet installed the pedals. Using the tip of my index finger on the side of the crank arm at about the level of the chainring to spin it up. Don't recal why, but whatever I was checking seemed to require that I spin it as fast as I could. Guess where the tip of my finger, at about the first knuckle, wound up??? In the chainring and chain. It stopped solid about half way round. I about went blind from the pain and my finger was stuck in there and it made the chain really tight. There was no shorter way to go get it out and the added tension made it hard to turn either direction. But I had to. The tooth that I was engaged with went about 4mm into my kunckle so once I was out of the chain, I still had to pull my finger off the gear tooth. That whole ordeal probably lasted about 10 seconds, but it felt like my finger was stuck in there for an hour. After enough years, you learn specific habbits to keep your hands and fingers away from things like that. Sorry for your injury man, it's gonna suck for a few weeks or so....but I bet you figure out there ain't nothing you need to do at or near the rotor and caliper that requires you touching it while it's spinning. The one thing I never learned was not to spray cleaner on the rim while it's spinning on the truing stand. I still get spackled up the front of my shirt and face from the Simple Green or Windex or whatever flying off. Guess it never hurt enough to teach me that lesson....LOL |

I no longer have the crater where my scalp was ripped off. Now it's more of a divot. At least it's easier to shave now. The tissue healed kind of weird. I can touch part of my scalp around the scar and it feels like I'm touching a spot two inches away.

I can relate, finger injuries suck, I was cutting the last few vinyl tiles and the knife slipped over the edge of the straight edge I was using right into my thumb, I could feel it hit the bone, 5 stiches. |

I haven't got enough unmarked skin to make a decent lampshade. The best one is the 5-inch scar on my leg from where the axe went in. Stuck into the bone, ruined a pair of shoes with all the blood. Fixed it with a shop rag and duct tape. I'm not even going to mention all the DIY surgeries with the old X-Acto....

The X-Acto is quite useful for getting rid of those nasty cysts. Poke, squeeze, clean mirror.
