| another guy who doesn't deserve 4wd
on the way to work i got stuck behind a guy in a Zuki XL7 who had to slow down to 20 mph and go into the oncoming lane to avoid an obstacle. the obstacle? a rock, half the size of a pop can. glad my ride is built Ford tough. i rolled right over that baby! yeah! |

While that guy may have been a little over cautious, you never really want to drive the tires over a large rock at speed. It can kick up, and slam into the car behind you. I have seen a peice of channel aluminum go flying after someone drove a tire right over it. But all said, I am sure even an XL7 has enough ground clearance to pass it under the chassis instead of changing lanes |

there was a little girl (almost?) killed this way (i think it was in Florida). It was on the freeway... A truck ran over a 3 foot piece of steel rebar at 70mph and kicked it up. A minivan caught the rebar, right through the windshield, pinning the little girl to her seat like a skewer. I remember seeing it on the news. |

what drive me NUTS, is the people that live in my apartments. the kind who drive trucks and SUVs. Every damn one of them drives over speedbumps so slow, you'd think they have glass sugar wedding cakes in the back!! c'mon, you drive a truck! I have to go slow because the suspension in my car is stiff enough to require a visit to the chiropractor. |

yeah, okay, i'll concede to you guys driving around the rock the size of an airplane liquor bottle. so how do y'all explain a Yukon going over railroad crossings at 5 mph? a crossing that has been re-paved in the last 3 years, and that i see the same damn Yukon crossing 3 days a week (we must be on the same schedule)? it's not like he's got ultra-low profile tires, either. factory wheels. Chevies ain't THAT fragile! and he's not a school-bus driver, stopping for safety, i don't see his noggin turning. he just slows down and picks his line over the smoothest part of the grade crossing, which isn't noticeably different than the roughest part. thank God it's a 4-lane crossing and i can pass this weenie. |

Why would you risk getting in a head-on collision to miss a little rock?? |

I see people risk head-ons all the time just to pass someone who is already going the speed limit. But - just because you pass using the opposite lane dosen't mean you are automatically risking a head-on collision - just make sure you only do it when you can see far enough down the road for it to be safe. I am not saying he should have used the opposing lane to aviod it - What he should have done is drive over the rock so it passed under his vehicle, between the wheels. All I am saying is don't run over stuff with the tire. Last edited by Mad Scientist; 10-13-2005 at 09:31 PM. |

This thread makes microgoat look like one of those tools who thinks he can go 90mph in blizzard conditions simply because he's got a 4x4...

and i don't even have a 4x4. my Ranger's a 4x2. and i couldn't go 90 even if i wanted to. there are 7 speed traps that i know of each way going to and from work, and i work 6 days a week. they're not always occupied, but with speeding tickets going for $100 these days... that there's a set of 40's Moabs. |

Why is someone that drives a 4x4 / SUV expected to hit speed breakers fast or not avoid rocks in the road? I have a 4x4 and I go slow over speed breakers and avoid most obstacles in the road. Some people like to take care of the vehicles they have. granted a 4wd Should be able to take the abuse , but over time all that abuse adds up. my 2000 4wd Ranger is in Excellent shape with 89000 miles. The truck wasnt cheap by no means. really want to see someone go slow over a Speed Breaker....Get behind me when I am in the Mustang hehehe |

I've never babied my vehicles (except for using Mobil1), and most have gone 200k. i take that grade crossing at 25 mph every day and still don't have squeaks or rattles in my '03 Ranger, 18k and counting. maybe he has a hemhorrhoid or something.
