According to reports, the Turner Joy was in a sea battle against Vietnam ships and was heavily damaged, which gave Pres. Johnson the power to engauge Vietnam in a more or less official war. Which he did. You know the rest.

According to my sf-i-l, shortly after that incident the TJ came to in port where he was stationed, and much to his shock and surprise, it was no worse for wear than when it left.

He pretty much said "fawk this bullchit" and shipped home when his tour was up.

Fast forward to 2005 when many Vietnam era documents were declassified. In those documents, you'll find that the TJ never was attacked, and that its distress call and subsequent reports were false. You'll also find that Pres. Johnson was alerted to this fact shortly after he made the decision to attack Vietnam, but didn't do anything about it.

So, either A) somebody made a collosal screw up, or B) Johnson needed an excuse and somebody fabricated one.
So kinda like Iraq in 03 I guess.

Pretty sweet knife too.

Here's another cool item. When was the last time you saw one of these?

Dug these up too. There are mine, but I have no clue what to do with them. They look so nice I hate to toss them.

Can anybody guess what they are and what they're for? Or how old they are?

Nope. That is a Firestone promotional ashtray. You used to be able to see them in tire shops. I haven't seen one in probably close to 30 years.
