Default cool find...

So I'm cleaning the garage, and sorting through/consolidating my late stepfather-in-laws tools and came across this...

A quick search on the net shows that its a WWII era USMC pocket knife.

very cool find, i'd like to get one like that, as a handy knife to have with me all the time, but rustic and cool at the same time too.

A can opener, a bottle opener, a butter knife, and a short stabbing utensil?

The short one is concaved on the other side and sharp on the tip. I used to know what that was for, but I've forgotten. I want to say its for poking holes in things (belts, boots, canvas, etc).

Dubbed the "Demo" knife, as in "Demolitions".

Probably for open cans of Hi-C fruit punch. Remember that? Big hole for drinking, small hole for ventilation.

Not sure if they were exacly like that, but that looks really close to the standard govt issue knives my dad used to have around the house when I was a kid. I think I have one in my tool box in the garage. Mine were not WWII era, probably more likely Vietnam issue.

Reading through the link I posted, around '73 they quit putting the stud in the screwdriver blade, and changed the brass liners over to stainless steel. In '49 they quit putting serial numbers on them. That might help you narrow it down a bit.

It was never intended for that specific purpose, it just got that nickname after a while.

Yup, its an awl.

Actually, he was in the Navy and got out just as Vietnam became official (I got a funny story why...) . Not sure where the knife came from. I could ask him, but, you know...

Yep, I just found it. No stud in the screwdriver and instead of the US Marine Corps it just has a slighter larger fonted US. Everything else looks pretty much the same.

I'm not sure if my dad brought these home from the Navy during the Vietnam conflict or he got them at work (He was in the Navy 8 years and worked for the Dept of Commerce until he reitred back aroud 98.) I'll try to remember to ask him tomorrow to find out their history.

Hopefully, my aren't anything to special. I've abused them. Heck, I think I used one to cut sod when I installed my lawn.

Not really.

The "Gulf of Tonkin Incident" (the second one, involving the ship Turner Joy) happened just as he was about to re-up his enlistment. According to reports, the Turner Joy was in a sea battle against Vietnam ships and was heavily damaged, which gave Pres. Johnson the power to engauge Vietnam in a more or less official war. Which he did. You know the rest.

According to my sf-i-l, shortly after that incident the TJ came to in port where he was stationed, and much to his shock and surprise, it was no worse for wear than when it left.

He pretty much said "fawk this bullchit" and shipped home when his tour was up.

Fast forward to 2005 when many Vietnam era documents were declassified. In those documents, you'll find that the TJ never was attacked, and that its distress call and subsequent reports were false. You'll also find that Pres. Johnson was alerted to this fact shortly after he made the decision to attack Vietnam, but didn't do anything about it.

So, either A) somebody made a collosal screw up, or B) Johnson needed an excuse and somebody fabricated one.
