Sweet justice indeed.

The idea of a piggy bank anywhere but in my home seems quite absurd. I certainly dont see a reason to just give to someone else to hold on to.

Will your homeowners insurance cover cash in case of a fire? Most banks cover each of their customers up to a specific amount (higher than I imagine most Americans store in their bank accounts)...and that is federally insured.

I dont see why not, so long as there was an understanding that a given amount was constantly on the premises

That is something you'd need to inform your homeowners insurance of. And they'd raise your rates accordingly.

They can be made theft proof too.

Anti-capitalist ideology is hard to adhere to in a capitalist society. I ain't ready to go off the grid just yet...mainly because I can't afford it.

Now you are just reaching for straws. You know that money is safer in a bank that is federally insured....

Not at all. You can buy lock boxes and safes that are all but bombproof, and when installed properly, theft proof.

We have a credit union account as well.

Called the credit union, gave them a VIN to a vehicle I wanted and told them how much I wanted to pay, they cut a check, I picked it up, and then I went to the dealer. Dealers hate that.

Another vehicle purchase - called USAA, gave them the VIN, and they made the funds available. She topped it off with "Anything else we can do for you?"

I miss the days of local banks where you actually talk to someone about a loan instead of the stupidity of approving loans based on a credit score.

ANYTHING can be stolen.

Either way, what it comes down to is the type of insurance you have. If you declare it to your homeowners insurance company, they will raise your rates. In a bank, the federal government insures your money up to $250K...and the fees are already built into your taxes.....a service you already pay for.

How much would your insurance premium go up per month vs the fees you pay each month for your checking accounts?

But yes, anything can be stolen. We learned that a couple years ago with Wall Street...

Yep....you are correct. Still a lower percentage of banks losing their money than houses getting broken into in this country.
