This. I was taught in a manual and haven’t owned an auto ever. Wife has one and when I drive it I keep wanting to press the third peddle that’s not there for the first couple of miles at least. Guess I’ll keep buying older, used vehicles since sticks are getting rare in new form. | |

My last three jeeps have all been manual. I've gotten a good deal of surprised responses on trail rides/ rock crawling from younger guys or from folks in newer/ auto vehicles... especially after overcoming a particular obstacle. But personally I've grown so used to a stick that I would feel like I was at a disadvantage driving an automatic. I learned to drive in an old pickup ( Ford?) but it was a '3 on the tree' manual. That was one hell of a vehicle for learning the ropes! Can't lie.... automatics are sometimes nice when I'm tired or when my joints/ muscles are sore but otherwise, I love driving stick whether on the trails or even around town... Not many Jeeps on 37's chirping tires at the light... although I don't really try to do that... just happens sometimes.

I learned on a manual as a kid, owned mostly manual trans till I lived in cities, went to autos, and even though I'm back in the mountains, I still drive an auto. Modern autos are so much better than they used to be, and I get sent to major cities for work and fun often enough that I don't miss the manual trans. Now if it was a true sports car or something, then probably manual.

Right now, I have even fewer regrets for buying a flex fuel car than I had at any point in the last 10 years since I bought it.
