Default Sellers who don't want to wait for their money in the classifieds

That is one of my peeves along with people who don't post pics of what they are trying to sell.

So I saw an item that would look nice on my crawler. I sent the seller a message and went about my business (I have a life, after all). About an hour later I log back on to RCC and I have a message from the seller saying "yes, you're the first one blah blah blah" So I sent the Paypal payment and then the seller messages back telling me that they already sold it. I did get a quick refund, though.

Me, personally, when selling something, I would give the first person "in line" about 6 hours tops to make payment. Because we all know how lucky we are to get first dibs at something that we like. But I guess some folks are just desperate for a measly couple of dollars....

I would likely PM a mod and let them see the PM's going around. They may "have a chat" with the seller to set things straight......

I thought that was against the rules to do a "for sale" without pictures......I would have to look. Yeah, I would likely skip to the next "for sale".

seems like 1 out of every 4 doesnt have pics. and theres no rule to give a buyer sonsotime to pay. i usually give 1hr and i see that as about the norm

It depends on what I am selling but I usually give the buyer 24 hours to complete the transaction from the first contact. After that it goes to #2 in line. I think 24 hours is a reasonable amount of time for them to ask all the questions, negotiate price, etc. anything more than that and I will open it back up and give the second person in line the same 24 hours to make the deal final.

I also state this at the beginning of my ad as being my policy and when they contact me I say you are number 1 in line and you have 24 hours to pay me or I will sell it to someone else.

I do understand a lot of buyers are flaky but I think a reasonable amount of time should be given. Basically any smaller parts or axles will generally sell in a day or two and rigs take maybe 3 days (if they are priced correctly at least), I think that is quite fast vs. other hobbies so I dont get why people sell stuff out from other people.

Holy crap. Hours? really? I've never used the classifieds but that is weak. A day or 2 for the non internet dependant people would be cool.

I personally always wait for an answer from the buyer/seller. When the person has a reason not to make the transaction, next in line will get a chance.
A few days or so. And never have I sold anything to someone else, when I already have a person who wants to buy it.
For me that is just common courtesy.

life gets in the way sometimes so i usually give people a few days to pay. if they say they'll take it, but end up backing out and dont pay it goes to the next person in line.

Happened to me a couple times. I just add them to the ignore list so I know not to even bother with them in the future.

I have no patience for slow replying sellers/buyers. That's why I have my phone tell me when I get a PM. If I can reply fast enough its likely they're still online and the transaction is done in minutes with good and fast two way communication

Here is the problem with waiting a couple days for payment. What if they never pay, or they decide they don't have the money? Now your ad is buried, and the other buyers will likely lose interest. I have had that happen a few times. I feel, if you are seriously interested in buying whatever it is, you should be checking back frequently, as to insure you are the one that is going to be buying it, and the seller doesn't just move on. Unless you and the seller have an agreement to allow you to pay for it within a couple days, assume that you need to pay for it ASAP, or risk losing out. There are so many ads on here, that the chances of the same item coming up for sale is actually pretty likely, so long as it isn't some rare thing. So, if you had people in line, and your buyer backed out on you after a few days, do you think that the people in line are going to hold their breath waiting for the chance to buy yours? NO. They are still looking, and going to take the next chance at buying what they wanted.

Let's be honest here.....Money burns a hole in your pocket, even if it is in paypal

I expect immediate payment unless other arrangements are made. I don't mind waiting a little bit if I'm warned ahead of time, but I'm not going to sit and wait for people to get around to sending me money.

Look at it this way: you're having a garage sale and someone comes up to your table and plops down something they want. They say "I'll take it", then turn around, walk back to their car and drive off, leaving the item on the table.

Are you going to sit on that item for a few days to see if they come back to pay for it, or put it back out so someone else can buy it?

I often wonder if it would be reasonable to ask for a "deposit" for someone who is asking for time to pay. Something around 5 bucks to hold the item until he comes up with the money.
People would be less likely to walk away from a sale if they had money invested already.
If someone can't come up with 5 bucks, they shouldn't be browsing the classifieds.

Where do you come up with this stuff? We don't give a damn if someone waits or not. Handle your own business and that's all. We only care if someone is getting scammed.

I give maybe an hour. If I get a message I'm usually replying quickly. I expect the same in return. I'm there to sell, not make a new pen-pal.

Yea, if you are trying to buy something and you arent willing to check back a couple times a day then how much do you want said item. Basically everything in the classifieds can be picked up new from RPP or our other vendors, they will let you order it whenever you want.

If the seller states no policy and doesnt tell you that it is reserved for you I am not sure what the problem is. If you read the ads most have something stating the sellers policy, sometimes it is like mine (24 hours) sometimes it is first to pay gets the item. it is up to you as the buyer to get the seller what he wants if you want the item.

I haven't sold very many things on here, but as a seller I prefer a quick payment from a buyer. I don't have an issue with giving someone a little bit of time to pay, next day at the max, but it has to be discussed and agreed upon. Usually, if I'm browsing the FS section, I skim through the ones without pics and will frequently ask for pics if something perks my interest. As a buyer, I send my payment as quickly as I possibly can. Depending on the amount being spent, if I need to consult with my financial advisor, I make it known with the seller and we'll agree on a timeframe in which to pay. Communication between buyer/seller is crucial.

+1 on the garage sale analogy

I forsee a bunch of FS threads with the words "Immediate Payment Required"

I feel that if you want it...send me the money. That is what I do when buying from someone. You probably shouldn't be PM-ing a seller if you are not ready to buy from him. I can understand if you have to transfer money to PP or something like that but get the seller to agree before assuming it's yours. Just my .02
